Women In Leadership at CA Technologies | Cristiana Darra

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Women in Leadership” blog series, we’re celebrating several of our women in leadership to find out what they bring to the organisation.

Meet Cristiana Darra. She’s Principal Consultant, Presales.

What does a Principal Consultant, Presales do?

Cristiana Darra

Cristiana takes a leading role in specifying technical solutions, writing proposals and tender, building custom presentations/demonstrations and delivering Proof Of Concepts (POC).

“My job is to support sales productivity and deal flow by securing the “technical close’ in complex environments. I collaborate with sales, services, engineering, and technical support resources to ensure proposed deals include technical solutions that accurately address customer needs, and are appropriately supported by key customer technical decision-makers. “

Bring What You Bring

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organisation and when speaking to Cristiana about what she brings to CA she told us that her main asset is empathy, as she strongly believes in the need to create a trustworthy relationship with customers.

“I always do everything I can to create the right level of empathy. I do not work (only) to sell. I work with the precise goal of helping customers achieve their goals. I believe that this attitude is appreciated by customers who take a serene and collaborative attitude towards me. This helps to create the basis for customers and CA success”

Cristiana and her family: from left to right, her sons Massimo e Marco and her partner Luca.

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Cristiana’s advice to current or future female leaders is to not focus on being a women in business, but to put that girl power into being the best version of you.

“It happens sometimes that women are on the defensive, waiting to react to a skeptical attitude from clients or colleagues. It happened to me when I was younger. Thoughts of this type only produce one result: a distraction from the ultimate goal. The reality is that in the end, there is no interest in anyone, man or a woman, unless you excel and lead by example. Count only on what you have to say and what you can do.”

My female inspiration

Cristiana has many female and male role models but mentions her biggest inspiration is Fabiola Gianotti.

Fabiola Gianotti, currently CERN Director-General was the first woman to hold this position. Her smile is always a source of inspiration for Cristiana.

Source: http://www.azquotes.com/author/27265-Fabiola_Gianotti

“Generally speaking, I feel a great admiration for all women who are so strong and who aren’t afraid to feel frail or weak in particular situations. Having confidence in yourself and in our own capacities does not mean to be robots. Women cry more easily than men. So? Does this make us less valuable professionals? Absolutely not. I have never had a precise reference model, but I do have a great admiration for Fabiola Gianotti.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the companies mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. She has selected the most important DNA traits that she feels will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

“Uncompromising Integrity – because passion for my job forces me to always honor my commitments. Authentic – because I try to be open and transparent, as often as I can.”

Women In Leadership at CA Technologies | Patrícia Paladini Adell

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Women in Leadership” blog series, we’re celebrating several of our women in leadership to find out what they bring to the organisation.

Meet Patrícia Paladini Adell. She’s the Director of Globalization.

What does a Director of Globalization do?

Patrícia is responsible for a team of translation professionals whose main aim is to provide translation services to enable international sales.

“I like to say that our job is to facilitate Product Teams, Corporate Marketing or any other teams at CA to translate and localize their products or assets into any language.”

Bring What You Bring

Patrícia with her future women leader, her daughter Bruna

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organisation and when speaking to Patrícia about what she brings to CA she told us that her main asset is creativity, as her job is to take care of designing the technology that supports translation execution following automated workflows at CA.

“Because me and my team are constantly looking for the best standards and approaches in delivering the highest quality translation assets, we have to bring the best customer experience, as well as maintain exceptional attention to detail when it comes to our delivery.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Patrícia believes that you should not be afraid of taking risks, whether that is at work or in general life.

“When I talk to women about challenges, sometimes I get the impression that they doubt if they are able to take a certain risk or if they are ready for that next step. It’s great to be self-aware, and that’s one of of CA’s mission DNA traits, but you also need to be positively reflective and move away from this ideology of negative self-awareness that can put ourselves by default on a secondary plane. Be brave. Take risks.”

My female inspiration

Patrícia has many female and male role models but mentions her biggest inspiration is her mother.

Patrícia and her mother

She was able to develop herself having come from a very traditional education in which women were supposed to be “nice and quiet” to being at the forefront position in leading a family business and raising for large amounts of years on her own, a family of 5 children.

Patrícia with her mother and four siblings

“Specific to my career at CA, I would like to mention names like Debra Danielson, a role model to all of us as women in leaderships positions. Nivedita Aggarval, a top women reference in work ethics not only at CA but also specifically for women in India. She participates in several conferences and events to help Indian women to take leadership positions. Outside of the organization, women like Anna Schlegel, who’s one of the top influencers in the Globalization arena. Anna is one of the founders of Women in Localization, a professional organization for women with a mission to foster a global community for the advancement of women and the localization industry. Finally, I cannot avoid mentioning my colleagues in the Globalization team and my best-ladies-friends and sisters, all them women leaders in their professional and family areas: every time we get together, we end up exalting the role of women, supporting each other in our daily challenges and celebrating women success.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the companies mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. She has selected the most important DNA traits that she feels will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

“I believe woman leaders should fulfill all our DNA traits but I would like to place emphasis on the following:
– Self-Aware (perception is reality)
– Resilient (we never give up)
– Creative (we always have a plan B for everything)
– Uncompromising Integrity (we ask the right questions to clearly understand and support our goals following ethical, honest, forthcoming and transparent approaches).”

CA Technologies France Seeks More Diversity in Technology

As the Talent Acquisition Manager for France at CA Technologies, I am always very proud when we hire great sales women to pitch our software solutions and services in areas such as:

  • Application Performance Management
  • Infrastructure Management
  • DevOps
  • API Management
  • Identity and Access Management
  • Agile Solutions

It is wonderful to see women in technology:

  • Generate new sales opportunities in various industries
  • Respond to specific problems of large enterprises
  • Present to potential clients alongside pre-sales, marketing, service and partners
  • Complete large deals after long and complex sales cycles in Technology.

Women In Tech

Unfortunately, it’s wide knowledge that women are still underrepresented in Technology Sales. I would certainly like to meet more female candidates with the relevant education & sales experience in Software License Business. However, the more technical it gets, the more difficult it gets to identify the more suitable candidates. At the same time, I am aware that it hasn’t been easy for women to access positions of responsibility in Technology Sales and that it takes time to change attitude and behavior of not just industry leaders, but girls who are considering STEM careers from an early age.

In terms of gender equality, it still frightens me that children are programmed to think a certain way from the earliest age. Some aspects of our contemporary societies are still very traditional and there is still a gap between our intentions for more gender equality and the reality. A good example to consider are the gifts given to children at Christmas. In many toy shops, there are still two separate shelves one for boys and one for girls. Many children games and toys still support gender stereotypes.

Inspiring the Next Generation Into STEM Careers

At CA Technologies France and across EMEA, we support community activities with a primary focus on STEM education. We pride ourselves with encouraging young people and especially girls to show more interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We hope that girls will find these topics as interesting & fun as boys and that they will be willing to persevere.

Earlier this year, 25 pupils aged 14 years old came from a College in Aubervilliers to visit our company in Paris La Defense for an interactive day with CA’s employees. They participated in workshops, and exchanges on job advice and various collaborative exercises to explore new technologies.

CA Technologies also support the “Transaharienne project” led by our partner Engineering school “ISEP” in Issy-Les-Moulineaux. Earlier this year 24 students from ISEP came in to install computers from CA Technologies and give training to children from disadvantaged schools in South Morocco.

Today many working women are looking for a career that offers flexibility and enables them the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling life outside of work and this includes a good family life. However, many women and in particular working mothers at times are having difficulties to manage a personal life and a demanding career. I believe that to encourage gender diversity, some concrete actions are needed such as allowing employees to work from home when needed, flexible hours etc.

Bring What You Bring to CA France

At CA Technologies diversity matters and the company has made a strong commitment to increase the number of women in technical roles and the number of men in general administrative positions. Some countries are more advanced than others on the subject, in particular those countries where CA offices offer the benefit of Montessori Children’s Centers on site.

Today we speak a lot about agility at CA Technologies. Being agile should have a positive impact on diversity and should allow women to have more flexibility at the workplace. We ask our candidates to “Bring What You Bring” to CA Technologies. That means a diverse workforce of talent people, bringing a range of diverse experiences, diverse thought from both talented men and women. That’s why each hire we achieve of talented women in Technologies Sales is a step forward.

Welcome to Ditton Park, CA’s home in Datchet, England

Ditton Park, CA Technologies home for UK & Ireland has recently undergone a stunning refurbishment. We caught up with the masterminds behind the re-design and renovation Jim Barry and Sarah Hewett.

What have new employees got to look forward to?

Our offices in Ditton Park have always been a great place to work, built within 204 acres of parkland with a Manor House surrounded by a moat, auditorium a maze and tennis courts. So, with the new look and feel internally we’ve really added to what is already a fantastic location. Employees can look forward to stunning designs concepts in breakout areas, team rooms, meeting rooms for internal meetings, which can be in a warehouse, a beach hut, an orangery or just sit in the tube carriage on the station.  As well as customer facing meeting rooms which have their own unique design. There are also what we call connecting spaces, where you can grab a coffee, catch up with colleagues or just chill out.  We have also moved away from the old panel hung workstations with high panels and migrated to desks that enable you to sit or stand to work.  There is something different in every renovated office that you probably wouldn’t expect to see.

What was the inspiration behind the new look offices?

As a modern software company we felt that our spaces didn’t actually mirror that, not only in the look and feel but also in what they provided for our people, so we wanted to bring our spaces to life through a radical change and also provide a more Agile working environment by providing collaboration space, focus areas, spaces for chilling out and areas to have those confidential or crucial conversations that all contribute to creating an agile working environment for CA employees. On top of that we wanted to create a place that inspired and oozed innovation. We wanted to create a place that we’d want to work in. CA’s mission is to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes, we wanted to break down the barriers in the design of our new offices to bring those ideas to life by providing an incredibly ergonomically friendly, inspiring and agile working environment.

What’s been the feedback like from the UK Team?

When we initially unveiled the 1st Floor of Ditton Park the reaction was amazing. The energy in the space was incredible and hearing the screams of excitement makes you realise all the hard work has been worth it in creating a working environment that influences so many great employees. The feedback has been very positive from all employees, including senior leadership who’ve shown their appreciation.  At Ditton Park, the chalkboards placed around the kitchen areas were all filled with thank you and appreciation message for their newly renovated spaces, I think they are still there.

Favourite Place at Ditton Park?

So many to choose from but the Tube Meeting Room and the Warehouse (Connecting Space) were the most fun in the planning and are equally fun to work in.

A Day In The Life At CA: Associate Services Consultant

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Services Consultant at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Associate Services Consultant profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Yashar

Yashar Abbasov, Associate Services Consultant, is a man of many hobbies. Here he is at sea, which is a place Yashar loves to be.

Yashar’s Career Story

Although Yashar will only just have celebrated his 1st 18 months at CA Technologies at the end of this year, he’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center.

“I started working at CA a little over 15 months ago. This is my first post-university full time contract.”

The Life of an Associate Services Consultant

We asked Yashar how he would describe his role as an Associate Services Consultant and why he loves it.

“I automate complex, lengthy and expensive installation, configuration, release and deployment processes. I help top Forbes 500 companies in banking, insurance, telco and logistics to succeed in the application economy in adopting CA’s continuous delivery tools and best practices along the journey.”

A typical workday for Yashar starts with a big welcome to his fellow team members, followed by setting up the environment for the top priority tasks, before fetching the first mandatory cup of cappuccino.

“I never felt that any two days are the same at CA. We do have recurring calls and meetings, but there are always new challenges which turn into satisfying rewards as I accomplish them. As any other multilingual certified consultant working at CA, I often travel abroad for business. I’m constantly developing new skills through training’s that are offered to me.”

When we asked Yashar what is the favourite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the impact of his work for customers, the support unit he has as well as the vast diversity of talent CA has in Prague.

“First one is the impact of my work. Second, is that I always get the support I need from my colleagues and my manager. The same way, I am always pleased to help. Finally, I like the international diversity of our teams.”

Life At CA

Yashar is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. He like the very neat individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is perfect for an effective teamwork. He is also complimentary of the break out areas, with the abundance of meeting rooms.

“Our office sits in a modern building which is located on premises of a stunning technology park on the south-west of the Czech capital. It has all the amenities and facilities needed nearby. There is even a shopping mall 10 minutes away by walk. The best part is the wide range of choices for where to go for lunch.”

We’re extremely happy the benefits we offer to our Prague employees meet those sporty needs and it is a vital part of why Yashar loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA offers lots of great benefits, but my favourite one is the vouchers we get for sports and entertainment activities. I use them to get discounts for swimming and bowling.”

Yashar’s Career Advice

Yashar would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large global software company with great career opportunities and company culture.

“CA is one of the largest software companies in the world with an astonishing portfolio and customers. It is great for people who like to work with software, develop software and to learn complex business processes and the latest trends in technology. CA maintains great culture, openness to innovation and global career opportunities.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Yashar for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Services Consultant! You can follow his adventures on Twitter (@bardimus) and LinkedIn here.

Why I Joined CA Technologies Germany?

Meet Volker Zinser. He recently joined CA Technologies as a Senior Solution Strategist for Cyber Security. We caught up with Volker to hear why he joined the Security business at CA Germany.

What were you doing before you joined CA?

Before joining CA Technologies, Volker’s career started as a verification engineer. He’s career thus far has seen him transition his career into sales and has seen becomes success in multiple Presales Consultant and managerial roles in the Security Software business.

“During the years, I accepted different roles with leading security companies like Kaspersky as Head of Sales.”

Volker mentioned that he was in contact with two other security vendors as well as CA. He decided to join CA as he enjoyed the whole candidate experience and felt the opportunity was the best for his career.

“CA made me feel that they really want me to grow something great.”

What was the biggest reason for you joining?

Aside from having friends at CA with 12 years’ tenure, and hearing about the positive experience, Volker’s biggest reason for joining was the challenge.

“The challenge to enter a market which is and will be always to me the best to work in.”

How has life at CA started for you?

Volker has thoroughly enjoyed the start of his career at CA Technologies, explaining that he loves how CA feels like working for a start up in a big company.

“There are so many things to do. After the first few months, I feel like I have found a new home and that I want to be here for the future.”

What advice would you give to someone who’s considering joining CA Technologies?

With CA’s employer brand, ‘Bring What You Bring’ we asked Volker what do people need to bring to CA Technologies?

Why do I love to continuously learn about the Mainframe?

We caught up with Ivan Satsiuk who is based at our Prague Technology Center. He joined CA back in May 2016 as an Associate Software Engineer and was recently promoted this summer to Software Engineer.

The favourite part of Ivan’s job he has huge scope to continuously learn new things. Not only is it exciting that he can learn all these new technologies, solutions and possibilities, he’s also hugely grateful for the resource network he has around him at CA Technologies.

“The best thing for me is that I have all the time and resources I need to keep learning. This was especially important when I first joined. All the best engineers are one email away and everyone is willing to help you to resolve problems if you need assistance with your work.”

Ivan and his colleagues keep up the latest technology all the time. Mainframe Technology is constantly evolving, so to make sure products run using the latest updates, Ivan and team ensure it is compatible with newest OS, mainframe hardware and software utilities.

“A good example is zNext testing. IBM has released the latest OS and hardware, and prior to that CA has received an invitation to test our products on it. We’ve been given some time and resources to check our software and see what might need to be changed.”

Ivan told us that he has learnt many things since joining CA. He described Mainframe as “miles of undiscovered land” that he can’t wait to discover, and is confident CA can provide him with the right journey to keep learning new aspects of the Mainframe Technology.

“The most important thing that I’ve learned – is I can be sure that in the Mainframe world, there is an answer even for the most complicated question. And finding an answer is just a matter of searching through the docs or asking colleagues around me for guidance or knowledge share.”

Ivan in the office at the Prague Technology Center

Recently, Ivan considered specialist areas of Mainframe research and decided to take a deeper dive into ‘Blockchain’. Blockchain has been around for many years and it was exciting to hear Ivan was given the opportunity to pursue his research on job.

Finally, big players got interested in it. IBM is doing lots of research in that field. The trigger point for me was when CA joined the Hyperledger Project at the end of 2016. I didn’t hesitate to ask Ashok if there’s a team working on it. He’s put me in touch with the group that is making a research in that field on CA side. Since then I’ve been studying blockchain technology, and Hyperledger in particular.”

Ivan was specifically assigned to work on the Blockchain research full time. As a bit of a buzzword within the industry we did ask what potential it has?

“I believe it has a great potential in the future of IT, and Mainframe seems to be built for it. Mainframe has all the features that are required to run it in the most efficient way.”

We asked Ivan why should someone consider CA Technologies if you’re a software engineer looking to work with Mainframe Technologies?

“First thing is that there’s not too many places in the Czech Republic where you’re able to work on the Mainframe as a developer. Of course, one could go to a bank or an insurance company, but they seldom work with the latest technologies. At CA, a developer can get their hands on the latest tech, implement various algorithms, use a variety of tools, invent their own tools, whilst doing this all in an Agile manner. What else can a developer dream of? Apart from that, CA is treating its employees very well. We have lots of benefits, and great opportunities for everyone.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

“Never forget the women around you, those who helped you get to where you are today, and always pay it forward.”

My female inspiration

Growing up, Sarah was inspired by Kate Adie, OBE DL – who was the chief news correspondent for BBC News, during which time she became well known for reporting from war zones around the world.

“Firstly, she was a woman and I thought if she can do that, then I can too. Secondly, I was inspired by the power of storytelling.  It was a pretty powerful combination and it inspired me to become a journalist.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the companies mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. She has selected the most important DNA traits that she feels will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

Book signing for a young girl that won the 3M Young Innovators Challenge

“Creative – blended with Socially Aware. Constantly looking outside the organisation at new trends, topics, customer needs to ensure we are relevant and up to date in everything from how we go to market to how we engage with influencers in the market.

Resilient – important not to take things personally, to be able to take tough decisions when needed, even if not the most popular but are the best for the customer. Calm under pressure, I often liken my role to a swan; calm on the surface but paddling furiously underneath the water.”

Gail is responsible for the People function at CA which incorporates – People Business Partners, Talent Requisition and Talent Development, Reward and People Ops.

“Ultimately though I am here to support the business on all aspects relating to the leadership and management of their people.”

Bring What You Bring

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organisation and when speaking to Gail about what she brings to CA she told us that one of her main assets is her vast experience. She brings 25 years of knowledge gained from experience in Banking and Tech industries.

“I bring a sense of purpose and determination to ensure that our Company succeeds through the leadership of its most valuable asset, its people.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

With Gail’s vast breadth of experience, it was refreshing to hear the one piece of advice she would offer is to be yourself!

“Be yourself, don’t assume a role or a personality you think people want you to be but be who you are. You are more valuable if you are yourself and more authentic and authentic leadership ensures a more open and honest working environment where people are focussed on deliverables and outcomes that are best for the Company.”

My female inspiration

One of Gail’s inspirations is Dame Anita Roddick – Founder of the Body Shop.

“It was the first time I really thought about females being founders and CEO’s of a company. She took an idea and grew it and stayed true to her principles.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core DNA that aligns with the company’s  mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. Gail has selected the most important DNA traits that she feels will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

“You must know your self – strengths and weaknesses to be able to lead others, you have to be authentic in leading others so people know where they stand with you and you must be resilient to manage the pressures placed upon you.”
