Meet David

Digital Sales Account Owner David Hardy is what we like to call a “boomerang”. After working with CA for five years, David left to join another company. However, David says he jumped at the opportunity to return in a business development role, supporting our Global Service Providers, “which I was very excited about, regretted leaving frankly”.

David shared with us that his decision to return to CA is often justified through his experiences.

“CA management and co-workers are there when you go through a family crisis, be it a family member, health issue, or otherwise.  I had the occasion to experience this first hand and it really cemented my conviction that CA is the best company to work for (even with our areas to improve, which we are always working at).”

 

David’s Career Story

In 2003, David joined CA Technologies in his first role as a member of the Brightstor storage products team. In his new role, which began in 2011, David provides support for CA global service provider partners. This was initially IBM Global Services for four years, and David is now a part of the HP Enterprises Services team.

These roles make a huge impact on our global offerings. “I develop sales opportunities to partner with our service provider partners on CA solutions that are a white space for them. These partnerships help to complement their offerings, grow revenue while growing CA’s market presence.”

 

David’s #LifeAtCA

So why does David love his job?

“Working with awesome people and meeting new contacts over the phone. Helping to bring people, client requirements and solutions together! Every day is a different adventure!”

David is also a pretty big fan of CA’s new Tampa, FL office, where he is based. “Our new office has the most awesome view – the best of any company that I’ve worked for in my career! It also has a great layout and location (even with the traffic)!”

The Life of a Digital Sales Account Owner

A typical workday for David includes working from home one day a week (gotta love that flexibility!). He enjoys starting his day with a review of updates from his team and the company, through our internal social collaboration sites and emails, and greeting his local co-workers with fresh coffee in hand. This sets him up for success to dive into collaboration with the sales team and research to help his global service provider account discussions more effective.

“Lunch is often had in our kitchen room with a view, then enjoying a walk through downtown Tampa or along the Tampa Riverwalk.”

In the afternoon, David serves our customers and partners with discovery meetings, demos, and various other partnership activities.

“Training is also a part of many days, ‘sharpening the saw’ on product knowledge and skills to improve.”

We asked David what you should know if you’re considering a career with CA Technologies.

“CA is a 30 year old company, which is not really new. Today though, CA has the startup attitude, with exciting new products, organically grown software and connected in to the application economy.”

Pride Month Profile: Jesse Santa Cruz

Throughout LGBT Pride Month, CA Technologies celebrated by spotlighting a few of our amazing employees from the LGBT Community. Even though Pride Month is technically past, we have one more outstanding employee we’d like to introduce.

Meet Jesse Santa Cruz, Coordinator, Talent Acquisition, who is based in Boulder, CO. Jesse began working for CA two years ago. He originally worked for Rally Software, then helped the recruiting team when CA acquired that company.

We asked Jesse to describe exactly what a Coordinator, Talent Acquisition does.

“I ensure that candidates and interview teams meet on time and have meaningful conversations that lead to stellar hires for CA. A typical day for me includes tons of interview scheduling for roles across the country, meetings with the local HR team, and assisting the Talent Acquisition Marketing team with tasks such as social media analytics and copy editing.”

“This is my first role, and I’m glad that I kick-started my career with CA!”

Jesse says that the culture in the Boulder office has had a great impact on him as a member of the LGBT community.

“I have worked in places where I struggled with being completely open with my co-workers with what I do on weekends, who I go on dates with, and what my true interests and hobbies are. The team here in Boulder is judgement free.”

When Jesse isn’t at work, he enjoys getting outside for a hike. “Living in Boulder, Colorado, the outdoors is king!” You can also find him sifting through thrift shops for quirky graphic tees, and “attempting to emulate Bob Ross paintings with small yet incremental success.”

What would Jesse say to a member of the LGBT community considering a career with CA Technologies?

A Day in the Life At CA: Simon Cockayne, Founder, WhoZoo

Meet Simon Cockayne. Simon began his career with CA 17 years ago, when he came with the acquisition of Sterling Software. Since then he has worked with different business units on several products as a Developer, Scrum Master, Product Owner, Product Manager, member of the CA Coaching Circle and member of the CA Council of Technical Excellence. He is now working on WhoZoo, a startup he founded in the CA Accelerator.

“I am trying to build WhoZoo: A self-learning map to the human beings in your ever-changing organization.”

“As the founder it is my job to lead the team and, through the scientific vigor of Lean Startup, explore and learn as swiftly as possible if/how WhoZoo can be built into a thriving business.”

Simon works from his home and collaborates with the WhoZoo team and team members from other startups across the CA Accelerator. He says his favorite part of the job is the autonomy to try new things and the opportunity to put his trust in the people around him.

In fact, Simon said the best benefit of CA is the people who work here:

“Bright, inventive, passionate people. Eager to succeed and eager to help each other. To work together in our CA mission to ‘eliminate the barrier between ideas and outcomes’ – and thereby help people all around the world be successful with their endeavors and adventures – well, that’s just ace.”

Simon is also an ally of the LGBTQ community at CA Technologies: a believer in the power of diversity and inclusion. We asked Simon about his experience with CA as an ally and supporter of the LGBT community, and what he would say to someone from the community considering a career with CA.

“CA is an incredibly inclusive environment. Bullying and discrimination are NOT tolerated.”

In addition to the people, he also loves the CA Accelerator workspace in Santa Clara, CA.

“That’s a wonderful space for collaboration. And it’s not just the contemporary décor…or the light space…and open collaboration areas…it’s the feeling that anything is possible…and if you start with that feeling…then anything really is possible.”

“I talk too much. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I laugh a lot, sometimes too loudly. I am overly sensitive and worry about other people’s feelings. I am scared of heights. I am not afraid to experiment and try new things and fail in a public blaze of disappointment. I believe the happiness of the team is more important than the happiness of the customer. Only happy teams can be incredibly creative/productive…& that’s what makes customers happy, long term.”

Pride Month Profile – Lauren Rapkin

CA Technologies is celebrating Pride Month by spotlighting a few of our amazing employees from the LGBTQ Community.

Meet Lauren Rapkin, Senior Event Planner. Lauren is a remote employee working from her home Maryland, where she begins each day with coffee and a morning walk with her puggle, Bailey.

Lauren’s career journey with CA started four years ago when CA acquired Layer 7 and she was promoted into her current position. In her role, Lauren strategizes, plans and executes all types of events CA hosts or participates in, including tradeshows, conferences, workshops, customer advisory boards and, of course, CA World. Earlier this year, she completed our Leadership Development Program (LDP), a year-long program targeting leaders at all levels.

“I love that each day is different. Since I work on many different types of events, most days include collaboration with different teams and departments. Some weeks travel is required, which I enjoy!”

Bring What You Bring

Outside of work, Lauren enjoys photography, crafting, and building things. She says this naturally enables her to think outside of the box and come up with unique solutions.

“Creating memorable face-to-face experiences is what I do. I want customers to walk away from an event feeling a connection to CA, understanding that we can work with you to solve your business challenges.”

We asked Lauren about her experience with CA as a member of the LGBT community.

“It’s always been extremely important to me to work for a company that aligns with my own personal values. I got married two years ago and the team threw me a bridal shower, so sweet! I’ve always felt very comfortable being me. Having the respect and support from CA fuels my drive, I WANT to go the extra mile.”

What about CA benefits?

Meet Meghan Stabler, Advisor, Business Unit Strategy.

Meghan originally started working for CA in the 90s, left to join another company, then rejoined CA in 2010, which she jokingly refers to as her “second tour of duty” with CA. Meghan works from her home office in a town just north of Austin, TX, where she says the views from the three windows in her workspace “bring a smile to my face every day.” She enjoys the collaboration of her teammates and other CA employees.

“I get to work with some absolutely great people, inspiring leaders and motivated team members. That helps me bring passion to what we do. I love it!”

We asked Meghan to describe her role at CA.

“I’m working to ensure our CEO Renewal message and value proposition is front and center, internally and externally. My core objective, along with other members of Trevor Bunker’s Lifecycle Management team, is to ensure our customers extract maximum value realization from their product investments with CA.”

LGBTQ Equality

As a transgender woman, Meghan has been a leading member of the LGBTQ community and has worked extensively for LGBTQ equality for more than two decades in the workplace, military service and society. She has advocated for the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, worked tirelessly for marriage equality, and has even testified before the U.S. Congress and many state houses to ensure workplace non-discrimination laws include sexual orientation and gender identity protections.

“If we are only authentic at home and not at work, then we are only bringing a part of ourselves to our job,” says Meghan.

Meghan praises CA for their inclusive policies.

“CA has been a great champion for our LGBTQ causes and internally has many benefits that cover LGBTQ employees, couples and their families. That is something to be proud of!”

LGBT Pride Month Profile – Fabio Mazetti

CA Technologies is celebrating LGBT Pride Month by spotlighting a few of our amazing employees from the LGBT Community.

Meet Fabio Mazetti, Senior People Operations Analyst, who is based in Islandia, NY. Fabio began working for CA two years ago in Brazil and made the move to New York earlier this year.

We asked Fabio to describe exactly what a Senior People Operations Analyst does.

“I am responsible for reporting and data analytics – data driven decisions or the ‘3D View’ for the HR Business Partners Community to ensure they have the intelligence they need to run their business.”

Soon after he started working at CA, Fabio joined THRIVE, the company’s diversity network.

“I joined THRIVE right after I joined CA. There’s always ways to foster diversity at your office either being a LGBT or an ally.”

A typical day for Fabio starts early in the morning with a good homemade breakfast.

“When I arrive at work, I like to plan the rest of my day. Although I try it, the environment at CA is so dynamic that, sometimes, I end up doing things out of the agenda.”

Even with a dynamic work environment, work-life balance is still important. Regardless of what’s happening, a couple of espresso breaks (Fabio is an avid coffee lover) and lunch away from his desk usually make the agenda. He ends at least three days of his week at the gym, where he loves yoga class.

Outside of work, Fabio loves “movie theaters and popcorn and a good cup of coffee.” He is also an animal lover who rescued two sets of sibling cats who traveled with him from Brazil to complete his family in the U.S.!

We asked Fabio about his experience with CA benefits as a member of the LGBT community.

“There are so many, but the same-sex spouse coverage is awesome. It’s great that CA includes same-sex spouse/partners in health insurance. It had a weight in my choice to come to the USA.”

What would Fabio say to a member of the LGBT community considering a career with CA Technologies?

A Day In The Life At CA: Software Engineer

Meet Adam

Adam McKeown is a Software Engineer in our Vancouver, BC office.

 

Adam’s Story

Adam got into his technical career relatively late in the game. He started going to BCIT, a local technical college, at age 30. The contacts he made there opened the doors for networking opportunities, which led him to CA Technologies.

At work he spends most of his time looking through other developers’ code to find areas that need improvement or don’t line up with standards.

 “I really like that the work that I do feeds into something larger and that I can stand behind it. As a QA Analyst, I sort of have the final say in what goes out the door, and if I’m not satisfied that it’s what the client needs it gets reworked.”

Adam says he gets excited coming to work because he knows he’s going to learn something new every single day. He’s already encountered three to four new languages in the 10 months that he’s worked here.

When asked about the most challenging aspect of working for CA, Adam said it is the speed at which things move.

“We’re a big company, but at the same time we react very quickly to changes in the market place and to our clients’ needs. We use the Agile methodology, which means we’re on sprints and PIs, and every PI our product owner is coming to us and saying this is what the client wants, this is what the business needs and it’s up to us as a team to decide how we’re going to meet those challenges.”

Life at CA

One of Adam’s favorite parts of CA is the trust and respect he’s found here.

“At CA Technologies, we’re respected. There’s a lot of trust placed in us to do what we say we’re going to do, and we reward that trust by working hard and meeting all of the challenges that are set to us.”

He also enjoys the collaborative atmosphere and the diversity at CA.

“We spent a lot of time collaborating here at CA Technologies. We’ve got a lot of smart people from a variety of backgrounds, and it’s great because we have all of those different viewpoints and experiences and educations blending into one another.”

Adam’s Career Advice

According to Adam, the number one thing you need to be successful at CA Technologies is confidence.

“You have to have confidence in yourself and in what you know, because you’re going to have to apply it every single day. Sometimes you’re going to disagree with your co-workers and that’s totally natural. We want you to bring that passion, because we want you to teach us things that we don’t know.”

Meet Jennifer

When Jennifer (Jenn) Budveit, Principal, HR Talent Development isn’t working, she loves to travel with her family, especially to Disney World, and have fun with her family and friends.

 Jenn’s Career Story

Jenn has worked in human resources for more than 19 years and has her Master’s degree in Instructional and Performance Technology from Boise State University. During her career, she has held the positions of Training, Recruiting and Hiring Manager, Regional Process Manager, Onboarding Specialist, and Instructional Designer.

At CA, Jenn she was hired initially as a Senior Instructional Designer, designing content for various Talent Development programs. Her role has evolved to help support the Global Leadership Development Program (LDP) as the lead for instructional design and content development, provide support for LDP alumni along their continued leadership journey and is one of the global facilitators. She also provides a consultant role on measuring the impact and value Talent Development provides throughout the organization.

“I have been at CA for a little over three years. While I was not actively looking for a new path along my career journey, I knew I needed to be. I thought about the type of role, and the type of company that would be ideal for me one year before joining CA, but didn’t know how or when I would find that ‘perfect’ fit. Then CA reached out to me and it was all meant to be.”

The Life of a Principal, HR Talent Development

We asked Jenn how she would describe her role.

“I am part of the team that aligns our internal leadership development program with current industry trends, the business environment and the internal opportunities for leadership development within CA; both for the capabilities to be successful today, as well as into the future. We want to ensure LDP is providing the type of experience and the support our employees need to expand and grow their leadership capabilities.

A typical workday for Jenn includes a mix of working with others on content alignment and execution of the leadership development program and LDP Alumni community, as well working individually in designing content and activities.

We asked Jenn about the best part of her workspace, and she said that she loves being together with her co-workers and teammates.

“The brainstorming and collaboration that takes place on a daily basis, along with lots of fun and laughter, makes it a wonderful place to be in every day. The Islandia office, and this campus in general, is absolutely beautiful and designed with the employee in mind. Between the wonderful cafeteria, the workout facilities, the Montessori school, and the grounds; they all make me very proud to point out to anyone and everyone that this is where I work.”

When we asked Jenn what her favorite part of the job is, she told that she loves seeing the impact of the Leadership Development Program, or any of CA’s talent development programs, have on those participating.

“My passion has always been in finding the gap between actual and desired performance, determining which will be needed to effectively reduce or eliminate that gap, and then seeing that all play out successfully.”

Life At CA

Jenn has especially enjoyed the work/life blend she’s found at CA.

“The focus on work/life blend has, for me, been the best CA benefit. This is something I did not have in companies I have worked for in the past. I have the ability to put my family first when they need to be, and that makes it so easy to put CA first when it needs to be.

What would you say to someone considering working at CA Technologies?

“I will admit I did not really understand what our company did until I started researching it. I would say that just because CA may not be a household name to you, doesn’t mean it isn’t doing absolutely amazing things. It is such an exciting time to be a part of CA; every single employee is a leader here because every individual brings their unique perspective to the table. In a company that focuses on innovation, you want to be where your opinion will not only be heard, but it will be counted.”

David’s Career Story

Although David has only just celebrated his 1st CA Technologies work anniversary, he’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center.

“I started working for CA Technologies 12 months ago. For 10 months I’ve been working on a project for a big UK customer, taking care of their security solutions.”

 

The Life of an Associate Services Consultant

We asked David how he would describe his role as an Associate Services Consultant and why he loves it.

“My role is to help customers get the best out of their CA products, in order to both support and drive their business. As a Services Consultant, it’s vital I have great understanding of both – CA software and our customers, the people who are working with it.”

A typical workday for David starts very proactively, summarizing tasks he has for the upcoming day, saying “hello” and sharing a French Press Coffee with his team members.

“Usually we have daily stand-ups with our customer in the morning, where we are talking about finished and upcoming activities. Then I start working on agreed tasks. When I need assistance, I utilise my amazing team mates who are keen to help me. When it comes to lunchtime, we have many nice places to eat around the office where we can go. After eating lunch, I enjoy spending time on the table football in the office with team mates. It’s fun and gives the brain a break.”

When we asked David what is the favourite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the impact the products are having on our customers.

“I like customizing our products to fit customer needs. What I really enjoy is the time when we get to actually present it to customers and show them the impact. The biggest motivation I get from what I do is the fact that customers are seeing success and adding value to their business through using what I have delivered.”

 

Life At CA

David is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov, in which he describes it as an “oasis for business people”. He enjoys the natural environment surrounding the offices with ponds, and various animals like ducks and rabbits hoping on the green grass. David is also a fan of the surrounding activities available including volleyball and giant chess.

“The Prague Technology Center is more than just usual open office space. I enjoy the extra comfort we have: large desks; powerful equipment and laptop that’s necessary for me to do my job; comfortable chair and seating; plus, various beverages available in a kitchenette including free soft drinks, tea, coffee, fruit juices and water.”

As you couldn’t tell from David’s introduction, he’s a lover of sport. We’re extremely happy the benefits we offer to our Prague employees meet those sporty needs and it is a vital part of why David loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA has many benefits I like, but my favourite is most definitely the vouchers for sport activities and the access I have on the Business Park to do sport. Doing the job I do, means I’m sat for the majority of my day at my desk which is not very healthy. Doing sport after work is essential for good health and I am glad we have many sport benefits here at CA.”

 

David’s Career Advice

David would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large projects, with the potential to positively impact millions of people.

“Put simply, people globally are using technology that is reliant upon CA products and they don’t even realise it. CA is running core systems for huge companies, so you can expect to be working in large challenging environments. To put things into perspective, the project I’m currently part of has almost 100 million of our customers using our systems, which most definitely keeps me motivated to do my best at what I do.”

Vitezslav Vlcek, Principal Software Architect, has been in the Software Development and Engineering space for over 20 years. In his spare time, he’s a keen music and dance fan. Not only does Vitezslav play piano and has done since he was 12, he is also part of a folk dancing group.

 

Vitezslav’s Career Story

Vitezslav has an abundance of experience in the Mainframe space and has been with CA Technologies for over 8 years at the Prague Technology Center.

“I joined CA 8 years ago after I finished my PhD focused on Applied Mathematics. At that point in time, I had never heard of either CA products nor CA Technologies, however I did know about mainframe technology, because we had a class on hi-performance computing at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Sometimes, the lecturer would tell stories of his own career and mentioned Mainframe several times when he was doing some computation on ES EVM (a Russian clone of IBM360). At that point, I thought Mainframe was old and redundant technology. How wrong was I!”

Vitezslav has seen amazing support when it’s come to his own career development at CA Technologies. He’s had 5 different roles in his 8 years.

“I started as an Associate Software Engineer. After 6 months in the development team building MSM (Mainframe Software Management) from scratch. I was then promoted to Software Engineer and became part of the L2 Support Team, which was both a big challenge and opportunity to speak with customers, improve my English language skills and expand my Mainframe horizons. 3 years ago, the L2 support team disbanded as there was no business case for the team anymore, as we had solved all the solutions we needed to by which time, I’d become Senior Software Engineer. It was at the time when CA started to implement the Agile Transformation of Mainframe Business Unit. We formed an Agile Team called ‘3 Minutes’ and I was promoted to a Principal Software Engineer very quickly. This was not the last change in my career as most recently, an architect position became available. I applied, and due to my deep insight into internals of our products and knowledge of customer requirements, I became a Principal Architect.”

 

The Life of a Principal Software Architect

We asked Vitezslav how he would describe his role as a Principal Software Architect and why he loves what he does.

“I review incoming requirements and evaluate whether they fit our future plans. I asses how viable the product plans are and if they could be implemented. I define the architecture of products, planning both the product build and how the technical components will be connected. Sometimes I also develop small prototypes to help us better envision product plans as real products. I’m also a support resource in helping other team members with incoming issues and any product related questions they may have.”

A typical workday for Vitezslav starts with a brisk walk to work, a well brewed cup of tea and a look of his emails. He always meets with his team to have regular catch ups on progress and up-coming working.

“Come lunchtime, I enjoy having a small walk to get some fresh air. It’s important to have that time away from the desk screen. I normally have calls with our US colleagues who become active around 3pm our time in Prague (due to time difference). It’s then typically back to tackling issues and assessing new enhancements. Once a week, we get our innovation juices flowing by attending our Patent Review Board where we assess new ideas.”

Ask people what the favourite part of their job is and 99 times of out 100, people will not say “problems”. When we asked Vitezslav what his favourite part of his job is, you guessed it, he answered, “problems”. He certainly loves the challenge and compares his role to that of a detective and doctor when it comes to solving and fixing problems.

“I like solving technical problems – it is like puzzle. Customers provide a few hints, sometimes they are misleading so it can be like detective work. Once you identify the culprit (the issue), you then play the role of the doctor who must find a cure to heal a broken part. Moreover, it’s like being a doctor for humans, expect you’ve now got to fix the issue of a much larger, more complex mammal. In terms of my role, I’m having to fix issues on products that are very big and complex, which is where the challenge lies. Other challenges include building new enhancement requests that are coming from customers or internal teams. Usually we have to figure out how to develop new functionality in a very limited time to please the customer, whilst ensuring it doesn’t limit or break existing functionality.”

 

Life At CA

Vitezslav loves a lot about his #LifeAtCA. The office is in a very good location, and takes just 30 minutes to walk or 15 minutes by bike to get to the office. Vitezslav doesn’t have to use public transport at all. He also likes that the office is very well equipped, with shower facilities, massage room and the garage facilities are bike friendly.

“Most of my work is done sat stationary at my office chair, therefore I suffer from lack of movement. That’s why I really enjoy that we have regularly available office massages, yoga and pilates that I take full advantage of. It is a great opportunity to stretch all my muscles and it’s great for the mind. I’m lucky that both my wife (she works for CA as well) and I have participated in numerous CA Fitness Challenges. It’s very much built into our daily routine to walk to the office and back home every day.”

 

Vitezslav’s Career Advice

“Imagine what would happen if Google’s ‘search functionality’ or Facebook’s ‘post publisher’ was down for one day and compare it to the failure of any mission critical systems from flight ticket reservations to banking systems. Do you want to be a part of a company that creates the software that other companies depend on to succeed it this digital age and bring life to their products and services?
