A Day in the Life of An Intern: James Roberts

Wondering what it’s like to be an intern or associate at CA Technologies? We’ve asked a few of this year’s outstanding group to share their experiences and talk about #LifeAtCA as an intern/associate.

Meet James Roberts, Business Intern at our Ditton Park, CA office.

This is James’s first internship as a Business Intern. We asked what attracted him to an internship at CA this year.

“CA is one of the leading companies when it comes to employee welfare, this was a keen incentive for me because it showed CA would be a place where I could be creative and my ideas would be considered and appreciated. It also thrives with a diverse work culture with people coming from all parts of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. When arriving at the CA Technologies building at Ditton Park for my assessment day, I developed an instant buzz for the positive atmosphere within the building. The building boasts spectacular facilities and the role that they were offering gave me a great perspective of the company, what’s not to love?!”

In his intern role with us, James has gained hands-on experience in organizing events alongside with different business units to help gather both new leads, in addition to strengthening the relationships with current customers.

“My role allows me to transition through departments, including Marketing, Communications and Sales. This gives me a holistic view of the company and the chance to develop a wide range of skills within different environments.”

A typical day for James involves biking in around 9 a.m., grabbing a coffee, checking emails and working hard until lunchtime, when he eats with his intern friends and sometimes a few full-timers. His day also usually involves an afternoon break playing football or tennis with the other interns, then back to work until he leaves around 5:30.

James said the favorite part of his internship is to handle the challenges & task that he comes across every single day.

When asked about his favorite part of his work space and office, he said:

“It’s hard to pick the best part of Ditton Park because it boasts so many incredible places both inside and outside the building, from table tennis to acres of land to walk around, it is the perfect environment to work in. The sports facilities though are a cut above, with football pitches, tennis courts and a well-equipped gym, Ditton Park offers a wide range of lunch times and after work activities to improve employee well being. Having such a vast choice of activities around Ditton Park really does set it apart from other offices when it comes to employee satisfaction and well being.”

What advice would James give to a candidate coming to interview for an intern or associate position at CA?

“Bring what you bring, whether it be passion, innovation, or weirdness, CA has a place for you. It is important for you to be just yourself, because whatever you bring, it will fit into CA’s diverse culture. CA revolves largely around teamwork, so showing that you can bring individuals together and be a catalyst for conversation is a great way to impress in an interview scenario.”

Winners of the UK CA football tournament this summer

CA’s mission is guided by its DNA, beliefs that all employees strive to live by. We asked James what his favorite DNA aspect was his favorite.

CA’s collaborative part of its DNA is for me the most important aspect. It is the catalyst that allows the rest of the DNA to flourish, giving opportunities for people to be creative in the workplace. The collaborative nature of CA has allowed me to build relationships with the people I work with, which has helped me progress with my learning a lot quicker.

Many people who are new to the tech industry may not know CA Technologies. We asked James why an intern might want to consider a lesser-known B2B technology company as opposed to a better-known brand.

“I would suggest looking at the company and what it has achieved and especially for the way they treat their employees. From being the best company to work for single parents to receiving awards for employing a diverse workforce, CA’s unique working experience offers an incredible introduction to the world of technology.”

A Day in the Life at CA: Robyn Crotty, Sr. Product Marketing Manager

CA Accelerator is the internal incubation program of CA Technologies. Part startup, part venture capital and part think tank, the Accelerator is one way CA Technologies is encouraging internal innovation and breaking barriers within our organization. The CA Accelerator is a unique opportunity to join a big company, but have the feel of working for a startup.

As part of our “Day in the Life” blog series, we’re checking in with some of the people who build and define our latest projects and asking them what it’s like to work on an Accelerator team.

Meet Robyn

A marketing Jill-of-all-trades, Robyn Crotty is based out of our Denver Colorado office and works with the Yipee.io team helping the project gain awareness and make it to market. Robyn has been working for CA for 9 months, and has been working in different aspects of marketing at other companies for the last 7 years. Robyn has a lot to bring to the table on the Yipee.io team.

Robyn enjoys hiking in her free time

Team members on accelerator projects often need to wear multiple hats, particularly as the team is being built. What is Robyn’s title and what is she currently working on?

“Head of Marketing for a CA Accelerator Incubation – working on everything – strategy, digital marketing, demand gen, events, onboarding – you name it, I do it.”

Working for an Accelerator project is different than working for a large fortune 500 company, but it’s also different from working for a regular startup. What does Robyn like about her role on Yipee.io?

“Ability to work in a startup environment that is well funded with less risk. I can make quick decisions and grow my skills without many barriers to innovation.”

We asked Robyn what makes her current role with Yipee.io different from jobs she’s had in the past.

“More flexibility, ability to test and try new things, little barriers to getting the job done, but more uncertainty of success with a new product.”

Robyn exploring Hoi An, Vietnam

Anyone who has worked in a startup environment can attest to the fact that building a product from the ground up is exciting, and at times chaotic. As with most roles in a startup, a typical day at work is the atypical.

“I am constantly working on different projects, initiatives and experiments, so each day/week/month is unique.”

The Accelerator environment is not for everyone. What would Robyn say to someone considering a role with the CA Accelerator?

“It’s a great place for people who want to work in a fast paced environment who are okay with working under a level of uncertainty. Great teams!”

A Day in the Life At CA: Kayla Fuller, Sr. Product Marketing Manager

Kayla Fuller, Senior Product Marketing Manager

CA Accelerator is the internal incubation program of CA Technologies. Part startup, part venture capital and part think tank, the Accelerator is one way CA Technologies encourages internal innovation and barrier breaking within our organization. The CA Accelerator is a unique opportunity to join a big company, but have the feel of working for a startup.

As part of our “Day in the Life” blog series, we’re checking in with some of the people who build and define our latest projects and asking them what it’s like to work on an Accelerator team.

Meet Kayla

Kayla is a Senior Product Marketing Manager for CA and Head of Growth for FreshTracks.io, a CA Accelerator project. She joined the company very recently, working for Freshtracks.io for just a couple of months now out of the company’s Boulder and Denver, CO offices.

“It has only been a few weeks, but I am really loving it here so far! The emphasis on work-life balance is fantastic, and I have a wonderful team.”

Prior to joining CA, Kayla spent most of her career at advertising agencies and brings a diverse background in almost every type of marketing.

We asked Kayla what attracted her to a role with a CA Accelerator.

“I love the startup feel with all the benefits CA has to offer. I get to do innovative, fast-paced work with amazing resources I wouldn’t have access to at a traditional startup. The Accelerator offers the best of both worlds.”

What does a Sr. Product Marketing Manager/Head of Growth do?

“My job is to help FreshTracks.io grow! I do this through marketing, branding and go-to-market strategy.”

A typical day for Kayla starts with an overhead standup where she and the founders review Agile boards and discuss how to move things forward for the day from a strategic perspective. She spends most of her morning in meetings, and the second half of her day creating or planning.

“My favorite part of my job is that strategic and creative thinking I get to put into our product, and our brand as a whole.”

Kayla also loves her location and workspace.

“I love working part of the week in downtown Denver, and part of the week in Boulder. Both locations have such fun office spaces and are close to great restaurants and breweries.”

We asked Kayla what she would say to someone considering a role with a CA accelerator.

A Day In The Life At CA: Software Engineering Manager

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Software Engineering Manager at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Software Engineering Manager profile is part of our careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Petr

Petr loves to play Ricochet (similar to Squash) and Football and is very active when it comes to sports. He is currently pursuing an MBA degree to further develop his managerial skills.

Petr’s Career Story

Petr has been at CA Technologies Prague for over 10 years. He originally joined as an Associate Software Engineer, and three promotions later, is currently a Software Engineering Manager.

“At CA I started as an Associate Software Engineer in 2006. After 1 year I was promoted to a Software Engineer position. In 2010, I was promoted to Senior Software Engineer and started working with databases which was a completely new experience. Since the time I joined as an Associate Software Engineer, the company has changed a lot. We started using agile methodologies. With this working framework, more opportunities became available which gave me a chance to present my complex knowledge from the beginning of product development to the end of development life cycle. The fact that CA developed me from junior level all the way up to managerial level, it has given me the foundations and knowledge to lead two teams and I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”

The Life of a Software Engineering Manager

We asked Petr how he would describe his role as a Software Engineering Manager and why he loves it.

“In layman’s terms, I’m responsible for developing my team’s skills and careers, building new teams for continuous development and progress. The compliance of our processes within Software Engineering is something I also manage and look to continuously improve  in my role.”

A typical workday for Petr starts with checking his calendar to ensure reminders are in place. Once his day is fully scheduled and his ‘to do list’ is in place, he prioritises tasks, before fetching the first mandatory cup of cappuccino.

“Every day is different but the goal is usually to finish all the tasks from the list I’ve created for my actions. This is a big satisfaction for me to see all the deliverables being completed at the end of day. The biggest part of my role revolves around meetings.”

When we asked Petr what is the favorite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the progression of his team at CA and having a direct impact on CA customers.

“Making decisions that can directly impact customers makes me feel really good. It is important for us to be productive and adding value everyday. Aside from our customers, it’s a real satisfaction to see people develop within Software Engineering careers here at CA.”

Life At CA

Petr is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. He likes the individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is a perfect environment for effective teamwork. He is also complimentary of the break out areas, with the abundance of meeting rooms.

“I like the promenade among different offices where I can meet different people. From time to time there are events organized such as volleyball, football tournaments or Halloween celebrations. The environment is always kept clean. Offices on the business park are close to the subway which makes it easy to move around the whole of Prague without using a car. In other words, the office is perfectly reachable from every part of the city.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer to our Prague employees to meet their “work life balance” and it is a vital part of why Petr loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA provides so many benefits that it can be difficult to remember them all. Some of them are only seasonal and available for certain parts of the year but others are more permanent. The most innovative benefit seems to be that you are allowed three days off when you adopt a pet or grieve and deal with the loss of a pet. Personally, I appreciate having the day off to celebrate my Service Anniversary Day. It is one day which just simply allows me to reflect and relax so that I can continue to add value to CA.”

Petr’s Career Advice

Petr would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to work for a global company who invest in their employees.

“It is not about the job you do but about the brand you work for. CA has big potential for everybody who takes their role and professional career seriously. While other well-established software companies needs are to keep and maintain their market or brand position, it can allow for lack of opportunities because they are risk averse. On the other hand companies like CA have the opportunity to grow and are more open to allowing employees to take opportunities. From my own experience at CA, bureaucracy has been limited and I have had the freedom to make an impact in my role.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Petr for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of a Software Engineering Manager! You can follow him on LinkedIn here.

A Day in the Life At CA: Skyler Cozad, Sr. Consultant, Digital Presales

Insight on what it’s like to work in Digital Presales at CA

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight from a real CA employee. This Sr. Consultant, Presales profile is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

Meet Skyler

Skyler started with CA Technologies in 2014 as a Presales Associate, working with prospects to identify challenges and pair those to CA solutions. He came to CA from one of our customers.

“The excitement of coming from the customer side, working with a product that I knew and appreciated as a valuable tool for my job, is something I now carry when sharing our tools and solutions with customers and prospects alike.”

Fast forward three years, and Skyler has now moved into the role of Sr. Presales Consultant. So, what exactly does a Sr. Presales Consultant do?

“I work with customers to identify and solve IT problems. Usually this means digging through log files, replicating problems that they’ve seen, or just educating them on how they can use the tools in a way that suits their workflows.”

“I’m excited to have the ability and connections to work one on one with our customers to help them strategically leverage their solutions more effectively, and ultimately achieve the results they are after.”

 Loving the workspace

Skyler works with the Digital Presales team in CA’s Plano, Texas office.

“Working in an office has been a great experience. Previously I worked from home, and having the ability to coordinate and work with coworkers directly has been great. Problems seem to get solved a lot more quickly when you have the ability to turn around and ask questions, bounce ideas around, or just relax and shoot some dart guns at a teammate who may be focusing too intently on something else.”

“The office space is great in terms of how it’s set up. There are cubes, but not so tall that it keeps you from seeing your neighbors, communicating directly, and not having to walk across the floor just to see if your sales guy is available.”

What’s an average day like?

A typical day for Skyler includes a number of conference calls, strategizing on the best way to accomplish customer goals, and the occasional ping pong match.

“The first thing I do in the morning is spend about an hour to an hour and a half catching up on companywide emails, or studying up for the calls of the day. So much of what the team does involves specialized conversations around unique technology and features, it’s great to have the quiet to sit, read and process how this information will be presented back to the customer in the conversations for the day.”

The best CA benefit?

Skyler says the best benefit available at CA is the attention managers give to their employees, especially in terms of being able to take time off when needed, whether it’s to be present for a family emergency or to recover from a stressful time in the office.

“Having that time available makes it possible to work in a way that works best for you. I enjoy working in sprints, which can be days, weeks, or months long depending on the season. During this time I prefer to work many early mornings and late evenings. Although this can be very productive over a short period, it eventually leads to feeling tired and in need of rest. This benefit allows me to take time when it’s available to rest and recharge, but still be able to work the way that I enjoy most.”

 Why CA?

CA is a hidden gem when it comes working in sales at a B2B tech company. What advice would Skyler give to someone considering a sales job at a lesser-known company?

“View it as an opportunity. An opportunity to bring what you bring to create impact on the culture. Here in Plano, the team built the culture that we have today, we participate in the planning of our events, we’ve researched and continue to build a modern workspace with new technologies, and finally, we take ownership of the work that we do and the outcomes we achieve.”

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Software Engineer at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Associate Software Engineer profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Ksenia

Ksenia Ponomareva, Associate Software Engineer has a keen love for tennis. She likes to play it with her colleagues in the morning hours to keep herself fresh & focused.

Ksenia’s Career Story

Although Ksenia has only just recently celebrated her 1st year at CA Technologies this summer, she’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center. Ksenia has two university degrees in IT, but never planned to work as a programmer. She decided to give a try & is now very satisfied with her work!

The Life of an Associate Software Engineer

We asked Ksenia how she would describe her role as an Associate Software Engineer and why she loves it.

“My job is not just programming, I do a lot of different things, such as studying product, investigating the code and testing fixes, as well as have meetings and training’s. I am always learning new things, and CA provides you with the opportunity to improve your professional skills and I really enjoy this.”

A typical workday for Ksenia starts with organizing the top priority tasks for the day, before fetching the first mandatory cup of tea.

“Every day we have stand up meeting. There we discuss the things each of us are working on, our plans and current blockers. I find this very helpful as it gets me in sync with the rest of the team. We also have what’s called a parking lot. It is a voluntary continuation of up meetings, where people help each other solve their current problems and blockers.”

When we asked Ksenia what is the favourite part of her job, she told us how she loves to solve the programmes that directly impact the products and customers.

“Programming problems are challenging. I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a challenge. It is always a great feeling when you solve another puzzle that you know will help the product and the customer and you can go on to the next one. I constantly learn new things that come with new problem solving tasks and I like it very much.”

Life At CA

Ksenia is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. She likes the very neat individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is perfect for effective teamwork. She is also a fan of the break out areas, and the abundance of meeting rooms.

“We have very nice park around our office. In the summer we enjoy having lunch outside. The surrounding areas are very pleasant and I love to take a small trip to the the little pond where the ducks swim. In the office I like the kitchen very much, it’s a great space. I can have a coffee break with my colleagues in an unofficial setting and discuss what we are working on together. It’s also great for networking as I get to meet people from different projects and departments there.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer our Prague employees. In particular, Ksenia is a fan of the benefits we offer to meet the sporty needs of of our employees, which is one reasons she loves her #LifeAtCA.

“CA provides us with an opportunity to do sports (yoga and pilates) during work time, all costs covered by CA. It also provides us with language lessons, where I study English and Czech.”

Ksenia’s Career Advice

Ksenia would recommend a Software Engineer’s position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large global software company with great career opportunities and company culture.

“Working at a company like CA can be very rewarding & stimulating. CA provided me the opportunity without any previous working experience in Mainframe, proving that the company willing to invest to their employees. All newcomers take part in the two-month intensive training program (Associate Engineering Program). Employees can benefit from a designated mentorship that will help to build a solid technical foundation.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Ksenia for sharing her Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Software Engineer! You can follow her adventures on LinkedIn here

A Day in the Life at CA: Software Engineer

CA Accelerator is the internal incubation program of CA Technologies. Part startup, part venture capital and part think tank- the Accelerator is one way CA Technologies is encouraging internal innovation and breaking barriers within our organization. The CA Accelerator is a unique opportunity to join a big company, but have the feel of working for a startup. If you want to learn more about how the Accelerator came to fruition at CA Technologies check out this article, featuring our CTO Otto Berkes. Launched in 2015, the Accelerator is relatively new so we wanted to check in with some of the folks who build and define our latest projects, and ask them a few questions on what it’s like to work on an Accelerator team.

Meet Ali

Ali is a Software Engineer who joined the WhoZoo.io team five and a half months ago, and works out of the Santa Clara office. Ali has an eclectic background, likes to draw as a hobby, and who knows – you may have seen him in the past dancing in a panda costume (panda has since retired). Intrigued? So were we.

Diversity of thought is proven to increase team productivity, innovation and the bottom line, and Ali’s background is not lacking in variety.

“Prior to joining CA Technologies, I spent the last few years as an independent contract Software Engineer.  My professional career varied quite a bit before that: handyman repair work, TA-ing for various Biology courses, managing local bands & organizing art shows, prepping samples in a plant pathology lab, & content editing, to name a few things.”

Ali enjoys drawing as a hobby

YOUR ROLE

Accelerator team members often wear multiple hats, particularly as the team is being built, so we asked Ali – bare bones, how would he describe his job?

“On the most basic level, I’m one of the engineers developing the WhoZoo web application by creating its structure, then styling & defining the behavior of that content.  Beyond that, I enjoy acting as a cross-team networker, assisting collaboration & creating meaningful professional relationships.”

The CA Accelerator encourages internal employees to pitch their idea to the CTO and board members, and if the project gets funded then the team will receive small, incremental investments, like a startup. We asked Ali what attracted him to a role with the CA Accelerator.

“CA Accelerators feels like a “CA Labs” space, a fast-paced world where people from within can cook-up new ideas & assemble a team to give it life.  For those that enjoy making, building, & trying-to-understand things, like myself, this environment is a progressive, experimental, & innovative paradise.”

What about WhoZoo specifically?

“As for WhoZoo itself, my interest has been rooted in the mentality.  Culture is defined through a trickle-down effect.  From the very first interview, what prominently stood out to me, was the leadership’s genuine empathy: for each other, for their peers, & for their users.  This culture of helping & support is a prime foundation for success.”

YOUR #LifeAtCA

Each project team has a unique working style and culture that Founders help foster from day one, and we wanted to know what this might look like on the WhoZoo team.

“After I setup my workspace, I usually post a podcast or article I found interesting or relevant to the team’s chat, then create my todo list for the day.

Every morning we run through our daily standup so we’re all on the same page, then other members of the development team & I usually sync up.  Around 11:30 we get lunch, usually with some of the BlazeMeter team.

What I always look forward to is “The Roost.”  Every Friday, we spend 50 minutes, together, not working.  This space where we could talk about anything has helped us form a more personal & friendly bond.”

You can read more about “The Roost” in Simon’s (WhoZoo’s founder) blog post.

What is Ali’s favorite part about his office/workspace in Santa Clara?

“The setup.  We can easily pair or ask for feedback from other teammates or the others around us.”

Ali’s workstation

What about his favorite CA benefit?

“The “Bring What You Bring” mentality.  The culture at CA encourages everyone to proactively improve the space we share & the way we work, based on each other’s actionable feedback.”

Ali’s favorite spot at the Santa Clara office

Ali spoke on the personality type that would flourish in the accelerator setting, but what would he say to someone considering a role with the CA Accelerator?

“It’s fast-paced & can be challenging at times.  But the support system that the CA Accelerator program has crafted is a finely tuned machine, helping you & your team be the best you can, while still having a healthy life-energy-work balance”

A Day In The Life At CA: Associate Services Consultant

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Services Consultant at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Associate Services Consultant profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Yashar

Yashar Abbasov, Associate Services Consultant, is a man of many hobbies. Here he is at sea, which is a place Yashar loves to be.

Yashar’s Career Story

Although Yashar will only just have celebrated his 1st 18 months at CA Technologies at the end of this year, he’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center.

“I started working at CA a little over 15 months ago. This is my first post-university full time contract.”

The Life of an Associate Services Consultant

We asked Yashar how he would describe his role as an Associate Services Consultant and why he loves it.

“I automate complex, lengthy and expensive installation, configuration, release and deployment processes. I help top Forbes 500 companies in banking, insurance, telco and logistics to succeed in the application economy in adopting CA’s continuous delivery tools and best practices along the journey.”

A typical workday for Yashar starts with a big welcome to his fellow team members, followed by setting up the environment for the top priority tasks, before fetching the first mandatory cup of cappuccino.

“I never felt that any two days are the same at CA. We do have recurring calls and meetings, but there are always new challenges which turn into satisfying rewards as I accomplish them. As any other multilingual certified consultant working at CA, I often travel abroad for business. I’m constantly developing new skills through training’s that are offered to me.”

When we asked Yashar what is the favourite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the impact of his work for customers, the support unit he has as well as the vast diversity of talent CA has in Prague.

“First one is the impact of my work. Second, is that I always get the support I need from my colleagues and my manager. The same way, I am always pleased to help. Finally, I like the international diversity of our teams.”

Life At CA

Yashar is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. He like the very neat individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is perfect for an effective teamwork. He is also complimentary of the break out areas, with the abundance of meeting rooms.

“Our office sits in a modern building which is located on premises of a stunning technology park on the south-west of the Czech capital. It has all the amenities and facilities needed nearby. There is even a shopping mall 10 minutes away by walk. The best part is the wide range of choices for where to go for lunch.”

We’re extremely happy the benefits we offer to our Prague employees meet those sporty needs and it is a vital part of why Yashar loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA offers lots of great benefits, but my favourite one is the vouchers we get for sports and entertainment activities. I use them to get discounts for swimming and bowling.”

Yashar’s Career Advice

Yashar would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large global software company with great career opportunities and company culture.

“CA is one of the largest software companies in the world with an astonishing portfolio and customers. It is great for people who like to work with software, develop software and to learn complex business processes and the latest trends in technology. CA maintains great culture, openness to innovation and global career opportunities.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Yashar for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Services Consultant! You can follow his adventures on Twitter (@bardimus) and LinkedIn here.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be in Customer Portfolio Management at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This profile is part of our careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Neil Hardiman, Senior Director, CPM & Mainframe

Neil has been working for CA for last seven years in the Customer Portfolio Management (renewals) and Mainframe teams.

Neil’s Career Story

While Neil has an engineering background, he has spent more than 25 years of his professional life looking after large customer relationships through sales and marketing roles.

“I was educated as an engineer so problem-solving is in my DNA. From selling mining truck fleets at Caterpillar to very large backup power systems (Hawker), telco infrastructure (Fujitsu),  IT projects (Fujitsu & Unisys) and finally to software at CA. It took me a while to find my way to software but I feel this is where I belong.”

Life of a Senior Director in Customer Portfolio Management & Mainframe

As a Sr. Director, Neil is responsible for the CA contract renewals business and new mainframe business unit sales in Australia & New Zealand.

One of Neil’s favorite parts of working at CA is his team – “I have an awesome team. We all work well together and I enjoy coming to work every day. I’m lucky to have such a great team – they make me look good! I can’t ask for more than that.”

“We are generally involved in all the large and complex customer transactions, which can create a high-pressure environment. The team thrives on this and we never lose sight of our ‘Mission Essential’ motto that reminds us that with the growth of the application economy, large organizations are committed to the mainframe more than ever and it is our role to help them maximize their value from this business-critical platform.”

Email and Salesforce are the tools that dominate my day but, call me old school, I have a handwritten to do list that I revisit every morning, rewrite and reprioritize. The manual routine of rewriting the list brings a sharper focus to those important but low priority tasks that keep getting pushed out. My to-do list is always long and ever-changing but I get great pleasure in crossing things off the list as DONE.”

Life at CA

Neil likes to keep fit and healthy and appreciates the great on-premise gym and shower facilities at his CA Sydney office, as he regularly cycles to work.

“Like any capital city, Sydney peak hour traffic is bad. Cycling to work instead of driving only adds 10 minutes to my commute and the challenging hills keep me fit. The best bit of my cycle commute is the glorious Sydney harbor views I get to enjoy along the way.

Neil feels that CA has some great onsite childcare facilities that his team members get great benefit from. In fact, one of his team members who has been with CA for more than 16 years, started her career at CA as a preschool teacher.

Neil has also attended the company’s Compass Club for top Sales performers on two occasions (Africa & Europe) and feels that this is a fantastic way of recognizing not only individual achievements but also the support of the families in achieving those goals

Neil’s experience at CA

I feel at CA you can make a difference. I don’t feel like a small cog in a big wheel. Despite being on the other side of the world in Sydney Australia, I feel I have full access to anyone in the company.
