The exposure to the diversity of this great region, and to be able to apply that learning to our business issues every day, is both a privilege and a gift.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Nada believes that a woman should be true to herself. She should be authentic and should have a sprit to never give up – even when it gets dark out there.

“Be deliberate about choosing WHO you are – both at work and outside of work – and never allow anyone to make you feel small – because that is a choice that every one of us has within our own control – so don’t give that power away to others.”

My female inspiration

Nada has many female role models, but mentions her biggest inspiration is her Mother.

“My mum – she is the purest, most authentic, as well as strongest person I have ever known. If I can be even half the inspirational person that she is, then I will have achieved something in this life.”

CA Prague Inspires The Next Generation

As a part of STEM initiatives, Jim and some of his colleagues were invited to deliver a series of presentations to talk with over 60+ students from local secondary school, Gymnazium Benesov, to help them understand what it’s like to work in technology – and the variety of jobs available. This is a part of Create Tomorrow, CA’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program in Europe that aims to address the STEM skills gap and gender imbalance in Europe by encouraging school students to consider future careers in STEM.

“The students were aged between 16 and 18 and were a blend of 50/50 male & female. We were asked to talk to them about how we developed our careers in IT along with other subjects.”

Jim and his colleagues delivered an Agile Lego workshop. They then presented a quick overview on Agile/Scrum and then helped the students with an exercise to ‘build’ a village.

“The idea went down very well as there was a great interaction within the teams. We took a team each a as scrum master and advised them on ways to meet their deadlines. Some of the feedbacks were very positive. The students were given an idea on how crazy working against deadlines can be!”

Jim and his colleagues delivered a presentation on interviewing techniques providing advice and information about building effective CV’s and how to be successful at a job interview.

“We covered topics like current affairs – highlighting issues we face in the world today – and how technology plays a vital role in the way we socialize, work and transact in a fast-paced app economy. The students were very interactive and communicative and seemed to take a great deal from it.”

We asked Jim what did he enjoyed the most about giving back and inspiring the next generation into STEM?

“It was great to interact with these students and share experiences and life stories. They were very enthusiastic, so very willing to talk about their way of life and what they expected to do in the future.”

On asking Jim what students think about a career with CA Technologies, they went away knowing far more about the brand the role CA plays in the tech space.

“Many of the students voiced that they are interested in CA as a company and a place where they can develop their careers in the future. As they are only starting their university studies, they will always have CA Technologies in their minds for the future. We even spoke about future internships during their university studies.”

In a thank you message by students after one of the talks, one student said:

“Thank you for all the help you have given us with our future career. I especially appreciate the information and advices you have provided about our decisions in our professional life. Now I am convinced that I want to study IT at the University of Economics in Prague. I am pretty sure that I would like to see you one day as a colleague and from what you said I hope that it will be in CA Technologies. Again, thank you so much. I greatly appreciate your generosity.”

A Day In The Life At CA: Software Engineering Manager

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Software Engineering Manager at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Software Engineering Manager profile is part of our careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Petr

Petr loves to play Ricochet (similar to Squash) and Football and is very active when it comes to sports. He is currently pursuing an MBA degree to further develop his managerial skills.

Petr’s Career Story

Petr has been at CA Technologies Prague for over 10 years. He originally joined as an Associate Software Engineer, and three promotions later, is currently a Software Engineering Manager.

“At CA I started as an Associate Software Engineer in 2006. After 1 year I was promoted to a Software Engineer position. In 2010, I was promoted to Senior Software Engineer and started working with databases which was a completely new experience. Since the time I joined as an Associate Software Engineer, the company has changed a lot. We started using agile methodologies. With this working framework, more opportunities became available which gave me a chance to present my complex knowledge from the beginning of product development to the end of development life cycle. The fact that CA developed me from junior level all the way up to managerial level, it has given me the foundations and knowledge to lead two teams and I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”

The Life of a Software Engineering Manager

We asked Petr how he would describe his role as a Software Engineering Manager and why he loves it.

“In layman’s terms, I’m responsible for developing my team’s skills and careers, building new teams for continuous development and progress. The compliance of our processes within Software Engineering is something I also manage and look to continuously improve  in my role.”

A typical workday for Petr starts with checking his calendar to ensure reminders are in place. Once his day is fully scheduled and his ‘to do list’ is in place, he prioritises tasks, before fetching the first mandatory cup of cappuccino.

“Every day is different but the goal is usually to finish all the tasks from the list I’ve created for my actions. This is a big satisfaction for me to see all the deliverables being completed at the end of day. The biggest part of my role revolves around meetings.”

When we asked Petr what is the favorite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see the progression of his team at CA and having a direct impact on CA customers.

“Making decisions that can directly impact customers makes me feel really good. It is important for us to be productive and adding value everyday. Aside from our customers, it’s a real satisfaction to see people develop within Software Engineering careers here at CA.”

Life At CA

Petr is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. He likes the individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is a perfect environment for effective teamwork. He is also complimentary of the break out areas, with the abundance of meeting rooms.

“I like the promenade among different offices where I can meet different people. From time to time there are events organized such as volleyball, football tournaments or Halloween celebrations. The environment is always kept clean. Offices on the business park are close to the subway which makes it easy to move around the whole of Prague without using a car. In other words, the office is perfectly reachable from every part of the city.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer to our Prague employees to meet their “work life balance” and it is a vital part of why Petr loves his #LifeAtCA.

“CA provides so many benefits that it can be difficult to remember them all. Some of them are only seasonal and available for certain parts of the year but others are more permanent. The most innovative benefit seems to be that you are allowed three days off when you adopt a pet or grieve and deal with the loss of a pet. Personally, I appreciate having the day off to celebrate my Service Anniversary Day. It is one day which just simply allows me to reflect and relax so that I can continue to add value to CA.”

Petr’s Career Advice

Petr would recommend a Services position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to work for a global company who invest in their employees.

“It is not about the job you do but about the brand you work for. CA has big potential for everybody who takes their role and professional career seriously. While other well-established software companies needs are to keep and maintain their market or brand position, it can allow for lack of opportunities because they are risk averse. On the other hand companies like CA have the opportunity to grow and are more open to allowing employees to take opportunities. From my own experience at CA, bureaucracy has been limited and I have had the freedom to make an impact in my role.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Petr for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of a Software Engineering Manager! You can follow him on LinkedIn here.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Associate Software Engineer at CA Technologies?

Ksenia’s Career Story

Although Ksenia has only just recently celebrated her 1st year at CA Technologies this summer, she’s made real impact to the business at the Prague Technology Center. Ksenia has two university degrees in IT, but never planned to work as a programmer. She decided to give a try & is now very satisfied with her work!

The Life of an Associate Software Engineer

We asked Ksenia how she would describe her role as an Associate Software Engineer and why she loves it.

“My job is not just programming, I do a lot of different things, such as studying product, investigating the code and testing fixes, as well as have meetings and training’s. I am always learning new things, and CA provides you with the opportunity to improve your professional skills and I really enjoy this.”

A typical workday for Ksenia starts with organizing the top priority tasks for the day, before fetching the first mandatory cup of tea.

“Every day we have stand up meeting. There we discuss the things each of us are working on, our plans and current blockers. I find this very helpful as it gets me in sync with the rest of the team. We also have what’s called a parking lot. It is a voluntary continuation of up meetings, where people help each other solve their current problems and blockers.”

When we asked Ksenia what is the favourite part of her job, she told us how she loves to solve the programmes that directly impact the products and customers.

“Programming problems are challenging. I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a challenge. It is always a great feeling when you solve another puzzle that you know will help the product and the customer and you can go on to the next one. I constantly learn new things that come with new problem solving tasks and I like it very much.”

Life At CA

Ksenia is certainly a fan of the office and the area on the business park in Chodov. She likes the very neat individual working areas in the office and the overall setup is perfect for effective teamwork. She is also a fan of the break out areas, and the abundance of meeting rooms.

“We have very nice park around our office. In the summer we enjoy having lunch outside. The surrounding areas are very pleasant and I love to take a small trip to the the little pond where the ducks swim. In the office I like the kitchen very much, it’s a great space. I can have a coffee break with my colleagues in an unofficial setting and discuss what we are working on together. It’s also great for networking as I get to meet people from different projects and departments there.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer our Prague employees. In particular, Ksenia is a fan of the benefits we offer to meet the sporty needs of of our employees, which is one reasons she loves her #LifeAtCA.

“CA provides us with an opportunity to do sports (yoga and pilates) during work time, all costs covered by CA. It also provides us with language lessons, where I study English and Czech.”

Ksenia’s Career Advice

Ksenia would recommend a Software Engineer’s position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to be part of large global software company with great career opportunities and company culture.

“Working at a company like CA can be very rewarding & stimulating. CA provided me the opportunity without any previous working experience in Mainframe, proving that the company willing to invest to their employees. All newcomers take part in the two-month intensive training program (Associate Engineering Program). Employees can benefit from a designated mentorship that will help to build a solid technical foundation.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Ksenia for sharing her Day in the #LifeAtCA of an Associate Software Engineer! You can follow her adventures on LinkedIn here

Pet Benefits for CA Employees!

CA Technologies offers best-in-breed Pet Benefits for employees’ fur babies!

In addition to our popular benefits for parents, did you know that CA has pet benefits for pet parents? CA employees can take time to appropriately welcome the addition (paw-ternity leave, if you will) or to grieve the death of their beloved animal friends. We will also send a special gift bundle to welcome new fur babies to #LifeAtCA, at the employee’s request.

pet benefits at CA
Chief Human Resources Officer Guy Di Lella understands how important it is to foster relationships between pets and their people by giving them time to bond, and this benefit is another way CA is continuing to develop family-friendly benefits to make the company an even greater place to work.

“One of the most effective ways we can make our customers successful is through the strength of our people — by attracting, developing and retaining the right people to achieve our Mission; by being a great place to work; and by creating an environment that marries hard-charging DNA with a little fun,” Guy said in a recent note to employees.

Here are the details:

  • If you get a new a pet that would benefit from special parent-pet bonding time, you may take up to 3 fully paid days off.
  • If you get a new pet (or got a new pet since the beginning of 2016), you can receive a CA-branded “pet bundle” to welcome your newest addition to the CA family!
  • If you are faced with the unfortunate loss of a beloved pet, you may take up to 3 fully paid days off to help grieve and deal with your loss.

We’re looking forward to seeing all the happy CA pet pics on social media! Tag yours with #LifeAtCA so we can share the love.

Added Benefits for Breastfeeding Working Mothers at CA Technologies

The benefits for new parents at CA Technologies never cease to amaze me. We have beautiful, roomy Wellness Rooms that are private and secure, ensuring a peaceful and welcoming space for pumping. Also, if your child attends a CA Montessori school, you can even take a break from your desk to cuddle and feed them anytime! But I must say, the policy to reimburse breastfeeding working mothers to ship their milk during business trips is one that is particularly unique and applause-worthy. I often write blogs about our work culture through the eyes of various CA employees, but this shipping reimbursement benefit hit a close, personal note for me.

It has been a while now (and a few employers ago) since I was a has-milk-will-travel mamma, but I very clearly remember the frustration involved. I kept a stiff upper lip and only asked for the accommodations I absolutely needed from my employer because it seemed like so few people had been through or understood all of the roadblocks one encounters when facing the demands of both exclusively breastfeeding and traveling for work.

Breastfeeding Working Mothers
The early days of figuring out the balance of exclusively breastfeeding and working full time.

Much more distinct than the fear of forgetting to pack storage bags or a crucial pump part (no, well-meaning and clever co-worker, I can not use an oil funnel instead), was the dread of flying back home. This experience very much hinges on the country, the airport, and the security agent you’ll be dealing with. I had a pretty good routine, understood the policies of the facility, and was prepared with remarks and a printed out set of guidelines from the TSA website for various levels of unwarranted pushback I’d receive:

“This is more than 3.4 oz.”

Yes, it is. I’m allowed to have an exception for breast milk.

“Why do you have all of this breast milk, but no baby with you?”

That’s exactly why I have so much. The baby is not here to drink it, so I needed to pump.

“I have to X-ray the liquids.”

I’d rather you not, but I can pour out a small amount into a separate container for you to test and dispose of.

“You’ll have to check these.”

I’m actually allowed to have this as a carry-on, along with the ice packs. Can you please confirm this with your supervisor?

After a few rounds of this, I figured it would be easier to just ship it back home on dry ice. Then I realized that after the weight of the 5-9 lbs of dry ice needed, on top of the several ounces of milk involved, this could cost around $30-$100 to ship. That adds up!

So, as we enter World Breastfeeding Week, I want to give a special kudos to CA for taking a deeper look into the various needs of working parents and going above-and-beyond to help them balance it all a little more comfortable!

What to Expect on Your First Day of Work – CA Technologies

Jen Botti gives us the inside scoop on what it was like on her first day of work at the CA Technologies offices in Islandia, NY.

We all ponder the night before what’s actually going to happen on your first day of work on a new job. Many of us anticipate feeling completely overwhelmed and lost in a huge office building. You may wonder where will I eat lunch and with who? Will I be underdressed, how do I get my computer and desk? Can I park anywhere, and most important of all will there be decent coffee?

Being a new addition myself to our Islandia office, I can assure you that you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Day one at CA Technologies will set you at ease and fill you with excitement. For example, as you enter the Islandia office you will find plenty of parking throughout the beautiful CA campus, even close up spots for expecting mothers. Plus, you’ll drive by tennis courts, basketball courts, a walking trail, and a helipad. Instead of searching cubes for an unused desktop, CA technologies mails you a backpack with welcome goodies and gets you set up with a laptop on your very first day. So, you’ll already start with everything you need!

You won’t have to wander around looking for someone to tell you where to go next; a Human Resource orientation leader will greet you. During your guided building tour, you’re likely to pass an impressive fitness center. Not only is it free for all employees, but they offer group exercise classes. How does a Yoga class sound for a lunch break?

First Day of Work - CA Technologies Islandia Office

As you head to lunch with your manager, you’ll experience the full service cafeteria. Much better than the average break room. But best of all, there is Starbucks coffee!

The huge pile of questions in your head will soon diminish during your informative orientation session. Everything from payment information, travel time, career development, training tools, and time management will be answered, and then some.

Finally, as you go home to your family at night to share your amazing first day stories, you can even think about the onsite Montessori Children’s center. Maybe you’ll be bringing some family along next time. But, this is just what happens on your first day of work – imagine all the rewards you’ll gain as long term CA employee. Best of luck!
