A Day in the Life at CA: Ryan Phillipowsky, Digital Presales Consultant

Ryan Phillipowsky, CA Digital Presales Engineer

Insight on what it’s like to work in Digital Presales at CA

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond and give you insight from a real CA employee. This profile of one of our Digital Presales Consultants is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

Meet Ryan

Ryan is relatively new to CA – he’s been working as a Digital Presales Consultant in the Plano, TX office for around seven months.

What exactly does a Digital Presales Consultant do?

“I help large organizations resolve their day-to-day IT challenges by introducing them to software solutions and industry best practices.”

Always learning

A typical day for Ryan starts with morning coffee, returning emails and prepping for customer calls.

“Work is actually pretty fun for me. My days consist of customer demos, and surprisingly, learning. Continually learning while on the job is a huge upside for me. I’m always excited to learn more about my area of focus, as it allows me to offer additional insight and value to our customers.”

The best part of the job

Ryan say the best part of the job is interacting with customers.

“I love going onsite and interacting with our clients in their own environment. This personal interaction not only allows me to properly contextualize the needs of our clientele, but it also contributes to a more trusting and productive working relationship with our consumers.”

The workspace

Ryan enjoys the collaborative layout of the Plano office.

“Having an enclosed yet open work area is awesome. It accommodates for needed privacy should my schedule be demanding, while still allowing me to openly interact and socialize with my coworkers.”

Desk of Ryan Phillipowsky, Digital Presales Consultant

However, he says his favorite part of the office is the people he works with.

“We’re a healthy mix of professional and silly, which makes the office environment equally fun and productive.”

Bring What You Bring

We asked Ryan what he feels is the best CA benefit.

“CA fosters quite a unique and inclusive work environment. Unlike most corporations, CA is incredibly considerate of family dynamics, personal growth or hardship, and all else that comes with being ‘you.’ My manager has been a wonderful representative of all that makes CA a desirable place to call ‘work’.”

Room to grow

We asked Ryan why someone might want to consider working for a B2B technology company like CA over a more well-known brand such as Google or Microsoft.

“Unlike other tech giants, CA continually shows a vested interest in their talent and our personal successes. We have the resources of a global company with a culture that encourages longevity and career progression.”

Meet Nada Buckley. She’s the Director of People Business Partner, ANZ

What does a Director of People Business Partner, ANZ do?

Nada takes a leading role in managing the ANZ People Team, and provides People Business Partner support to the ANZ Sales Business, as well as providing advice and guidance across general people issues.

“I wear an APJ Talent Development hat, in conjunction with my other APJ and Global TD partners, to develop and deliver critical training right across the APJ business.”

Bring What You Bring

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organization and when speaking to Nada about what she brings to CA, she told us that her main asset is her experience and passion, as she believes in delivering value to employees and making a positive impact on the business.

“I have had the good fortune to perform different management roles over the course of my career, including leading the CA APJ HR Team, and having the great opportunity to live and work in Hong Kong for 10 years. The exposure to the diversity of this great region, and to be able to apply that learning to our business issues every day, is both a privilege and a gift.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Nada believes that a woman should be true to herself. She should be authentic and should have a sprit to never give up – even when it gets dark out there.

“Be deliberate about choosing WHO you are – both at work and outside of work – and never allow anyone to make you feel small – because that is a choice that every one of us has within our own control – so don’t give that power away to others.”

My female inspiration

Nada has many female role models, but mentions her biggest inspiration is her Mother.

“My mum – she is the purest, most authentic, as well as strongest person I have ever known. If I can be even half the inspirational person that she is, then I will have achieved something in this life.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the company’s mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. Nada has selected the most important DNA trait that she feels will make her a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

Meet Sakaar Anand, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, India

At the helm of ~400 team members from CA Technologies, India is Sakaar Anand. He is a CA Technologies veteran with more than 21 years of experience in Information Technology and Human Resource Development.

Sakaar joined CA in 2008 as a Senior Director, Software Engineering and since then has held various roles at CA. Today, he is the Senior Vice President of Software Engineering & leads an enthusiastic team of software professionals, who help CA customers gain insight into their applications, their networks and their infrastructure.

In this Q&A, we speak with Sakaar about his role at CA, his career journey, his thoughts about an effective leader and what CA looks for, in an ideal engineer.

Tell us about your role at CA Technologies?

My teams own the development of CA Products which become part of an organization’s DevOps toolchain. We also own the internal deployment of the same DevOps toolchain for CA Technologies.

How has your career at CA Technologies evolved since you first joined the company?

I joined CA as a Senior Director, Software Engineering in 2008. I headed Technology and Process Shared Services for CA India for 2 years. Then I became the Vice President of Software Engineering, where my role was to provide expertise to CA product development teams in the domains of usability, accessibility, business intelligence and localization.

After this role, I got an opportunity to head HR for CA India. Though I was never planning to move to HR but when the opportunity came my way, I grabbed it with both hands as I wanted to learn about the other lines of business like Finance, Marketing and Sales, to be able to understand these functions by working closely with these Business Units.

After heading the India Human Resources Team for almost 4 years, I got another opportunity in the US to head the Global People Team for product development of all the products. Simultaneously I started heading Product Operations. I was in this role for almost 2.5 years and it was a dynamic and changing environment for me where I got to work with new people, new processes, experienced new ways of approaching the problem, new challenges of business and in my journey, I continually adapted to the change and learnt that ‘to adapt is to grow’.

During this time, I became the Senior Vice President for Product Operations and Human Resources.

Very recently, I moved back to India as the Senior Vice President for Software Engineering.

I always feel that there are a lot of opportunities for those who can embrace the change to excel. It is imperative to adapt to the changing times by updating our skills and experiences to stay relevant for an exciting future.

Sakaar Anand’s Office

In your opinion, what makes for an effective leader?

To me, an effective leadership requires real accountability. Accountability towards your goals, towards your work, towards your colleagues and towards the organization. Because when leaders take personal accountability, they are willing to face the consequences of their decisions and actions in all the circumstances.

That sense of ownership and responsibility also inspires the team and makes things happen. If you are accountable, the company can and will trust you.

How have you fostered a high-performance culture in the team?

I would again stress the importance of accountability here, because by fostering a culture of accountability in the team, you empower the employees to take ownership and when team members constantly demonstrate ownership and accountability, commitment to work increases. This results in high levels of trust amongst the team members and which ultimately drives high-performance culture in the team.

I always encourage all the leaders to drive the culture of accountability in the team and build trust through support and encouragement. Creating a culture of constructive accountability may require a culture change within the team but leaders will find the results well worth the effort.

Having joined CA in 2008 and then becoming SVP of India Agile Operations Team in 2017, what would you say are your top tips for climbing the ladder within an organization?

Three things that have worked for me are:

Never say ‘’No’’ to new challenges and assignments – Don’t get too comfortable in a role. Step out of your comfort zone and push your limits. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to take on more responsibility is a great way to grow personally and professionally. I have always felt that when you step out of a role to embrace something new, that’s when you make real progress.

I have never said ‘’No’’ to any role that the company has offered me. And a ‘’Never Say No’’ attitude towards any new role or a challenging project or assignment has made me reach where I am today.

Put the company first – Getting to the top position requires the simple concept of hard work day after day. As an individual who wants to grow in an organization, you shouldn’t get impatient and put the company first. Leaders should put the interests of their organization above their own. Give back to the company, create more capacity for people around you and it will automatically bring growth to you and to the team and the organization.

I have never asked, what the organization can do for me, I have always asked what can I do for the organization.

Don’t ask for a title, always ask for new roles and responsibilities – A promotion or salary increase is the most sought-after reward in the corporate race. And many people want to just go after a raise or a title. Instead, you should ask for new roles and responsibilities that you are willing to take on. Be proactive and look for opportunities, share your career goals with your leaders and talk about how you see yourself fitting in the new role.

What’s a unique career lesson you can share?

I always keep telling people that in today’s competitive world, those who are willing to take risks, those who are willing to step out of their comfort zone will be the ones achieving the greatest success.

Only when we take the risk & come out of our secure zone, can we take on a new opportunity, build potentiality and accomplish more. As we do, our confidence to take on new challenges increases.

I have never let anything, keep me from stepping beyond the confines of my comfort zone. We must continually introspect whether we are letting our fear of failure keep us from taking the actions that will move us forward and help us take the right decisions.

What is it about CA Technologies role that keeps you motivated and inspired?

I have been at CA for over 9 years now. We work in a unique environment that supports talent, innovation and creativity and the variety of projects, tools and technologies that we work on is truly exciting. My favorite part of my role is getting to work with inspiring people and my team, helping to make a difference.

Besides the amazing team and the exciting work that we do here, I have got tremendous opportunities to work in various roles, a wide array of projects and assignments. I have been lucky enough to get the chance to work in different geographies as well. The constant change and new & exciting opportunities have always kept me on my toes.

It is the opportunities for taking on new responsibilities and challenges that make working for a global company like CA so rewarding. These windows, in turn, bolster spirit and motivation.

We are consistently innovating and helping various organizations develop an agile architecture. The direct relation between the work we put in and the positive impact that comes as a result is so inspiring and empowering.

You’re hiring. What type of people are your looking for? What kind of qualities do you seek when hiring young engineer candidates?

We are a technology-driven company so we are looking for people who have a passion for technology, who keep themselves abreast with the emerging technologies, who have technical depth in their area of study, but at the same time can also expand the breadth of their engineering knowledge, who are inquisitive and fast learners.

In closing, do you have any advice for engineers who want to join the Tech Industry?

Be well rounded and don’t just learn to code. Be curious and study about latest developments in technology, technology trends and industry trends. And if you have a passion for technology, the grit to resolve the problem and the ability to see the bigger picture, then IT field is for you.

In addition, for any project team, agility is integral to the success of the project and it is extremely important for agile teams to be able to communicate their ideas well to the team members and the customers. I want engineers to be aware of this aspect as well.

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Sakaar for sharing his thoughts and advice for young software engineers! You can follow him on LinkedIn here.

A Day In The Life At CA: Site Lead for Research and Development

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a Site Lead for Research and Development at CA Technologies?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond that and give you insight on these key facts from the perspective of a real CA employee. This Site Lead for Research and Development profile is part of our new careers blog series “A Day In The Life At CA”.

Meet Mike

Mike comes with a very strong experience in managing teams and is very passionate about his work.

Mike’s Career Story

Mike has been working with CA Technologies since January 2017, and has made a real impact at the Prague Technology Center.

“This is my first role at CA. Previously, I was working with an International Bank for almost 15 years. They’re actually one of CA’s customers. I started my career as a database administrator and moved into a management role after 2 years. I was asked to then move to Singapore to set up a new team. I moved to Prague in 2010 and it was at this time that I shifted my career to lead engineering teams”

The Life of a Site Lead for Research and Development

We asked Mike how he would describe his role as a Site Lead for Research and Development and why he loves it.

“I am responsible for attracting, developing and retaining the best engineering talent in our Prague office and for the delivery of our Prague Mainframe engineering teams.”

A typical workday for Mike starts with checking his emails to ensure reminders are in place. Once his day is fully scheduled and his ‘to do list’ is in place, he priorities tasks, before fetching the first mandatory cup of cappuccino.

“I spend most of my day in meetings either in person or on the phone. I travel about once per month on average to meet with customers and/or colleagues. In the Czech Republic, it’s common for people to go out for lunch and this is a great opportunity for me to spend time speaking informally with different people about what they are doing and any challenges they are facing that I can help with.”

When we asked Mike, what is the favorite part of his job, he told us how he loves to see people’s career successes at CA.

“I really enjoy the variety of work and challenges and the satisfaction from being able to help other people succeed. We have around 400 engineers in Prague across 5 different business units, so there is a lot of variety and challenges for me every day.”

Life At CA

Mike is certainly a fan of the new office and the area of the business park. He likes the open space working areas in the office and the overall setup is a perfect environment for effective teamwork.

“What I like most about my work space is that it is in the open space, so it is much easier for me to collaborate with my colleagues. We also have a huge café/kitchen where everyone goes for coffee, lunch, etc. It’s a great place to meet people for informal conversations that helps me to keep a pulse on what’s happening in the office.”

We’re extremely happy with the benefits we offer to our Prague employees to meet their “Work Life Balance” needs and it is a vital part of why Mike loves his #LifeAtCA.

“I really like CA’s anniversary day off. It’s a great way to show appreciation to the employees and it’s a great opportunity to relax and recharge yourself.”

Mike’s Career Advice

Mike would recommend a Site Lead for Research and Development position at CA Technologies to anyone who wants to work for a global company who invest in their employees.

“It doesn’t matter how well known a company is, but what technologies it is into. The most important things to consider when looking at a company are the people/culture, the learning opportunities, and the ability to make a difference. CA is great in these areas.”

We couldn’t have said it better. Thanks to Mike for sharing his Day in the #LifeAtCA of a Site Lead for Research and Development! You can follow him on LinkedIn here.

A Day in the Life at CA: Johnathan Ripley, Digital Presales Engineer

Johnathan Ripley, Digital Presales Engineer

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond and give you insight from a real CA employee. This profile of one of our Digital Presales Engineers is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

Meet Johnathan

Johnathan has been with CA for two years, working with the Digital Presales team in the Plano, TX office. He started as a Digital Presales Engineer supporting commercial business, and has recently moved to supporting Managed Service Providers in the CA Agile Operations business suite. Johnathan says he enjoys the diversity of the role.

“This role has several different requirements. I can spend one day doing a demonstration for a new potential MSP partner, and the next day I am assisting with a product install.”

What’s a typical day like?

An average day for Johnathan starts with a morning cup of coffee, calendar and email review and daily technical blog reading.

“The typical day varies and that’s what I love about the role. Always changing!”

The best part of the job

Johnathan says his favorite part of the job is the people he works with, both internally and externally.

“I have a really great group of teammates here in Plano along with my field counterparts. We have developed strong friendships, which as a result makes the workplace fun!”

The office

Johnathan thinks the best part of the Plano office is the fun and collaborative environment. He also likes that there is an open workspace.

“I’m not confined to a cube. I get to interact with my fellow colleagues. It’s always nice to be able to turn around and ask a question to a colleague and get an immediate response.”

Mobility

According to Johnathan, one of the biggest benefits to working at CA is the ability to move into different roles and positions.

“CA is very supportive in their employees exploring other avenues within CA.”

Why CA over other tech companies?

Many people who are new to the tech industry may not have heard of CA. We asked Johnathan why someone might want to consider us over some of the better-known technology companies.

“Everyone knows Facebook, Google, etc. The best thing about working for a lesser known B2B technology company is you get to help grow the company. You get to help increase brand awareness. As the company grows, you grow.”

A Day in the Life at CA: Mark Emeis, Founder – Yipee.io

CA Accelerator is the internal incubation program of CA Technologies. Part startup, part venture capital and part think tank, the Accelerator is one way CA Technologies is encouraging internal innovation and breaking barriers within our organization. The CA Accelerator is a unique opportunity to join a big company, but have the feel of working for a startup.

As part of our “Day in the Life” blog series, we’re checking in with some of the people who build and define our latest projects and asking them what it’s like to work on an Accelerator team.

Meet Mark

As the founder of the Accelerator project named Yipee.io, Mark works out of the Colorado Springs office doing everything including hiring the Yipee team, measuring the project’s success, and driving the product direction, among a slew of other responsibilities. Yipee’s goal and vision is to simplify multi-service Docker applications from creation to orchestration.  We are building the IDE for Docker applications.

We asked Mark what exactly is Yipee.io, and how did he come up with the idea?

“[Yipee.io is] helping architects, developers, and operators take Docker from the toy and experimental stage to solving actual problems for their business. Teams I’ve worked on have solved similar problems in the past.  When Docker was beginning to gain traction, I recognized the need for Yipee.io “

Mark enjoys running as a hobby

The CA Accelerator program empowers any employee to pitch a project idea via lean canvas to the CTO and angel team, and if the idea is accepted to the program, then the team receives incremental investments in phases, like a startup.

Working on an Accelerator team shares many of the same attributes as working at a startup, but within the framework of a large and successful software company. This has its advantages because teams have access to CA’s extensive resources. Mark lists some of them:

  • Having a well-defined framework, Lean Startup, to follow
  • Support from a friendly angel team rooting for our success
  • The financial backing of a Fortune 500 company
  • Having a group of founders within the accelerator, which is extremely valuable when I need to talk through ideas. We share our successes and failures openly.

Mark also describes the benefits at CA as “comprehensive and extensive.”

An average day

Mark has a busy day-to-day schedule, but enjoys finding the time to take a break and get outside for some fresh air. In general, what’s the breakdown of Mark’s day?

“Check the metrics from the previous day (signups, returning users, net new models, etc).  Review the backlog (in Waffle.io, another incubation project). Catch up, never caught up, on email.  Meetings with users, developers, and others within CA – often about integrations with Yipee.  Review status of existing experiments. Learn more about the space, internalize the information, figure out if, how, when we should/could adjust. Take a run or bike ride to clear my head.”

Mark’s sweet new bike

Advice for potential candidates

Mark’s team is largely an engineering group, so he’s typically looking to fill development roles. While hard skills are important, when it comes down to bare needs, Mark is looking for candidates who are “smart and gets things done.”

Each Accelerator team has a unique culture and working style. Mark says his team thrives on teamwork and constant improvement, and gives great advice to those looking to join an Accelerator team.

“[Be a] team player.  Curious and motivated to answer questions. Desire to solve problems for our customers. Constantly strive to be better. Be open and honest about yourself and your abilities. Have a good idea where you want to go professionally.”

Since CA Technologies is a B2B company our brand is often not as recognizable to job-seekers, but it’s an exciting time to join life at CA.

“Prepare to have fun working in one of the hottest technical spaces.  Be ready to be challenged to do things differently.  This is a combination of a startup and large company – the best of both worlds.”

Does a job on a CA Accelerator team sound intriguing to you? Take a look at our open jobs on Accelerator projects on this page.

A Day in the Life at CA: Nathan Devoll, Team Lead, Digital Presales

What’s it like to work in Digital Presales at CA?

When searching for a role or starting your career in the tech industry, you’ll typically find bulleted information on a company’s job description, benefits and culture. We want to go a step beyond and give you insight from a real CA employee. This profile of one of our Team Leads for Digital Presales is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

Meet Nathan

Nathan Devoll, Digital Presales

Nathan has been with CA for three and a half years, working in the Plano, Texas office. He started fresh out of college in our Digital Presales Associate Program, which consisted of nine months of intense technical and soft skills training. Since then, he has moved up, first into a Consultant role supporting Service Virtualization, then into a Team Lead Role, running the Continuous Delivery Digital Presales team.

“As a team lead [I] help my team members achieve their personal goals and achieve success, and work with the sales team to strategically win business for CA.”

An average day

Nathan’s day typically includes a mix of customer discovery calls, internal calls and product demos. The first thing he does every day is check his email and calendar, then on to prepping for meetings or working on any projects that may be on deck.

Nathan says the best part of his job is helping people remove the barriers that stand in the way of their success.

“For customers, this is by helping them understand the best way to leverage tools and processes. For my team, this is removing barriers and teaching.”

The office

Nathan says the people are the best part of the Plano office.

“The digital sales and presales teams are like a big family here in Plano, and that helps to make it fun to go into work daily.”

Nathan - CA Together in Action

He also likes that his workspace is close not only to the presales team, but also the sales team.

“When you are next to each other daily, there is an atmosphere of continual improvement that begins to develop. It is also very easy to walk over to someone and have a conversation face to face.”

Benefits

While CA offers a wide array of benefits, Nathan says that his favorites are the “tiny things.”

“For instance, the company caters breakfast on Fridays and they provide fresh, movie-theater style popcorn once a week.”

 Why CA?

We asked Nathan why someone might want to consider CA over some of the better-known technology companies.

“I would say that we are well known within the technology space, but the cool thing about being focused on strictly B2B is that I know that I help most of the companies that people use daily create and execute on their vision, which then allows them to continue innovating.

“The other cool thing is that here you get to experience a company’s digital transformation first-hand with things like project Tensor and the move from mainframe focus to a more distributed focus.”

It’s All About Presales

In Sales, there are many parts that make the engine work, we can think of these as cogs on a wheel. One of the “cogs” is Presales also known as sales engineers. But who are they and what do they do?

These technically savvy individuals with a knack for Sales conversations leverage their expertise to align business and technical requirements for prospects and customers. Typically, Presales consultants work shoulder to shoulder with salespeople, providing the skills needed to demonstrate how technology can bring value to businesses. This is achieved through onsite meetings, workshops, conference calls, online presentations, video conference calls, etc. Other examples of day to day tasks include participating in tender responses, helping uncover customer needs, proving the concepts, providing training, and so on.

As subject matter experts, Presales consultants are often also responsible for assisting the partner community, training them on products, helping progress deals, etc. Furthermore, Presales might be called upon during public events; where presentations to broader audiences might be required.

Throughout all this, a Presales consultant acts as a guide for the customer, as well as his or her colleagues, both internal and partner.

The Digital Universe

In the age where digital forms of communication are taking over, many of the Sales related tasks we typically perceive as face-to-face are conducted remotely. Presales are no exception with product demonstrations, training and all that jazz being delivered digitally. To a point, even proof of concepts or supporting them is something we see being done so more often.

The shift towards digital does improve efficiency although at the same time creating new challenges. Take product demonstrations for example. When sitting across the table of a customer, you can tell whether they are with you, something an online presentation can´t always provide. It is then up to the Presales professional to adapt to this environment, and come up with ways of keeping the person on the other side of the line engaged, interested, and willing to take the next steps following the demonstration. The same goes for other tasks which are done remotely. Digital Presales must provide a similar experience as their onsite counterpart, only without the great benefit of body language and other positives of a face-to-face meeting.

Still, the benefits of remote delivery are hard to ignore. From the customer´s perspective, having a demonstration done remotely creates an opportunity to evaluate more solutions, as it is so easy to get in touch with more vendors. There is less hassle in joining an online demo than in hosting (sometimes multiple) salespeople. Think of all the emails you don’t have to send in planning for it and the coffee saved. Just as some prefer to shop online instead of visiting a shop in person, more and more do the same when shopping for IT solutions.

From a vendor perspective, not having to arrange travel for a team of people to another country for a two-hour demo session represents a great chance to cut down on travel costs, and carbon footprint. The Sales organization gets to cover more ground, and can pursue opportunities it previously simply could not.

Hi! I am originally from France and I have 3+ years of experience in enterprise tech support and interestingly I have a degree in History & Languages. I have always been curious of technology; with Linux in particular. I’ve been part for the CA Presales team for more than 2 years now and I got the chance to expand my skills tremendously, when I joined. I didn’t speak Spanish at a professional level and now I do. At work, I enjoy having to explain clearly the business value of software features to customers. In my free time I like travelling, cooking, reading, listening to music and tinkering with my Linux environment. I am native in French and can speak English, Spanish, Czech and a little bit of Russian (working on it these days).

Originally from the North of Spain but working & living in Prague for 4 years and half, I’ve been working at CA in Presales for under a year, covering all Presales for IT Service Management, IT Asset Management and Automation products for the whole of the EMEA region. My motto is, “If you do it, do it with passion”. The combination of my technical expertise and a Sales oriented attitude has made Presales my ideal role. I had previous B2B Sales experience and a deep technical experience with corporate IT Services systems so here I can develop both, my tech knowledge and my sales skills.

Born and raised in Prague, I’ve been in the city for close to three decades, in Presales for one sixth of that, mostly for CA. There are two vastly different disciplines present in today’s IT world, sales and technology. Being Presales means getting the best of both, as you get to keep in touch with the technology while being responsible for conveying it’s value to customers. That’s what brought me to it, and that’s what keeps me at it. Outside of work, I’m a father, metal head, a wrist-watch enthusiast, fan of good foods and drinks, with a few more selves hidden up my sleeve.

Women In Leadership at CA Technologies | Ana Ascasso Orbezua

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Women in Leadership” blog series, we’re celebrating several of our women in leadership to find out what they bring to the organization.

Meet Ana Ascasso Orbezua. She’s a Sr. Business Technology Architect.

What does a Sr. Business Technology Architect do?

Ana takes a leading role of coordinating between both sales and presales units, to understand customer needs and provide a specific solution.

“My role helps to translate the customer needs into our solutions, assuring that we are assuming and covering the customer’s expectations. Another part of my role is to coordinate to the all CA persons involved in some key step of sales cycle.”

Bring What You Bring

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organization and when speaking to Ana about what she brings to CA she told us that her main asset is collaboration & team spirit, as she strongly believes in cultivating an environment for everyone to give their best.

                                                 Ana with her family

“To address the business challenges, it is key to create a collaborative environment in which every individual gives the best to the team. When we work together as a team, in the same direction with the same goals, we are more effective and smart and if we win, everybody feels part of this success.

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Ana believes that women should deserve the opportunity to assume leadership positions, in every place of society.

“If we, as women, don’t show our willingness to lead, some others will do. Don’t be shy, believe in yourself. We are strong, smart and brave. Ask for an opportunity, take the risk and enjoy the journey.”

                                                           Ana as a small child

My female inspiration

Ana has many female and male role models but mentions her biggest inspiration are her Grandmothers.

                                                Ana with her Grandmother

“I have read many biographies about historic women, and all of them have the same characteristic. They were true to themselves, THEY WERE NOT PERFECT. In terms of role models my two grandmothers influenced me. They are both incredibly strong women, who both lived through a civil war on opposing sides, but both believed and faced the struggle themselves; they’re fighters, they’re entrepreneurs and they’re both fiercely brave. They were a big part of my childhood and I never felt that they thought differently towards each other (due to the civil war). Over the years I realized how different their lives had been and how respectful they were between them. They both taught me that I should live a life that would benefit myself in-compassing my own virtues and my mistakes. Antoni and Domi, my grandmothers, two great women of the last century.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the companies mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. Ana has selected the most important DNA traits that she feels will make you a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

  • self-aware, if I recognize my virtues and my defects, I can understand other people better.
  • resilient, we need to adapt to different environments.
  • uncompromising integrity, you can’t compromise honesty and truthfulness in any role, let alone a leadership position.
  • customer centric, CA is a company centered around our customers. Without them we don’t exist.
