Creative Minds At CA- Kiran Diwakar

CA Technologies is extremely proud of the caliber of its employees and celebrates their individual achievements. For us, our employees are our assets who play a great role in determining the company’s success and we believe in valuing, nurturing and retaining them. Hence, we like to support their innovative ideas and concepts that hold the potential to become ‘the next big thing’.

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Creative Minds At CA” blog series, we are celebrating several of our innovative employees who have brought pride to the organization through their prodigious work.

Meet Kiran Diwakar, our ‘Creative Minds At CA’ blog contributor. He is a Senior Director for Product Management at CA ITC. He is a highly driven and self-motivated individual with a large experience in the design and implementation of enterprise management technologies and the corresponding management solutions.

He holds 18 patents with the USPTO, ITIL v3 Certification, Pragmatic Marketing Certification, and a Professional Trainer Certification. Kiran was elected to and is part of the Council for Technical Excellence (CTE) within CA Technologies, a body of top <1% technical staff, chartered with mentoring and developing future technical leaders and providing expertise and perspective to executive management.

Kiran is also a part of the Patent Review Board which reviews patent applications made by employees for different areas including virtualization, mainframes, cloud, security etc.
Currently, Kiran is responsible for the overall strategy, life-cycle management, business and roadmap for enterprise-class management products in the Infrastructure Management, Application Performance Management & Analytics space. He has received multiple awards and recognition for his innovations.

What interests you in the innovation industry?

We asked Kiran what is it about the technology innovation industry that interested him and what did he want to achieve in this area. He said, “I always had a drive and fascination to make improvements in processes and find solutions to problems. From the beginning of my career, my seniors and colleagues have been inspiring me to invent, improve and evolve. I began doing the same and when I received my first patent which was an improvement to an existing automation product, I was thrilled. The fact that my work was considered unique enough to be recognized by USPTO for a patent was a driving force for me to continue on the path of innovation.”

What inspires you to innovate?

To succeed in something, one requires a goal and then an inspiration that can drive them towards achieving that goal. We asked Kiran as to what were the driving forces, which helped him achieve 18 patents. He said, “The spirit of competitiveness and doing something that is perceived impossible is the first factor. Each time a competitor comes out with a new product, I begin to think about ways to create a better product and outdo the competition. Apart from finding solutions to existing problems, speaking to the sales team and customers about the problems they are facing also acts as food for thought and helps to innovate a solution.”

Did you ever have a Eureka moment or was this a dedicated effort?

Innovation as a process itself is very unpredictable. Some people tend to have a ‘Eureka’ or ‘light bulb’ moment while others continuously put in efforts to think and come up with ideas. We asked Kiran as to which one was it for him. He said, “I never had a Eureka moment. It has always been a dedicated effort to think about problems and possible solutions. Previously, I used to work singularly but with passing years I have learned to work with different product teams and work collaboratively to come up with the best solutions.

How do you work on these innovations while balancing out the regular work?

On being asked as to how he manages to think of these innovations with other everyday tasks at work, this is what Kiran had to say, “I like to work on solutions when I am alone and not distracted by emails or calls. I make it a point to create some time every week to meet and talk to people outside of my work and discuss their views on different products and issues being faced by them.”

How and why do you find this process rewarding?

We asked Kiran as to what did he find rewarding in this whole process. He said, “Apart from the monetary benefit that I got as a patent bonus, the confidence I have gained from being able to invent and the recognition I got for it is most valuable to me. The fact that the product industry recognizes CA and I am recognized as an inventor is very satisfying. Also, this opens up many opportunities in the company.”

What would you suggest to other innovators?

Kiran has great experience in the field of innovation and we wanted him to share some tips and suggestions with other aspiring innovators. This is what he had to suggest, “Generally, people tend to undermine the work they do and do not realize that their work is unique and worthy of getting a patent. Innovation does not have to be a complicated or fancy idea. An improvement to an existing product or process is also considered as an innovation. Hence, I would suggest other engineers to not undervalue their work. Also, collaboration with other teams is very important. Talking to people about an idea helps get clarity, hence meet new people. Lastly, one needs to have a clear and defined problem to come up with a solution. Hence, understand the product and the problem, clearly map the situation and then start working towards a solution.”

Creative Minds At CA- Sai Eswar Garapati

CA Technologies is extremely proud of the caliber of its employees and celebrates their individual achievements. For us, our employees are our assets who play a great role in determining the company’s success and we believe in valuing, nurturing and retaining them. Hence, we like to support their innovative ideas and concepts that hold the potential to become ‘the next big thing’.

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Creative Minds At CA” blog series, we are celebrating several of our innovative employees who have brought pride to the organization through their prodigious work.

Meet Sai Eswar Garapati, our ‘Creative Minds At CA’ blog contributor. He is working as a Senior Data Scientist in Agile Operations Business at CA. He designs machine learning and statistical models to help customers discover valuable insights from their Apps, Network, and Infrastructure. He has been a part of the CA family for more than five years.

What interests you in the innovation industry and what is your dream innovation?

We asked Sai what is it about the technology innovation industry that interested him and what did he want to achieve in this area. He said, ” Nowadays every company is a software company, and with this, there is a vast amount of data generated but with very little actionable insights. This challenge excited me to leverage my background in machine learning and statistics to incorporate artificial intelligence in our products which will enable us to move from descriptive insights into predictive insights. My dream innovation is to have our products enabled with Artificial General Intelligence using Deep Learning. It’s an ambitious goal but I shall put in my best because I envision our customers concentrating only on their business and relying on us for the rest.”

How did you achieve this?

We wanted to know what were the steps that he took to achieve this goal and progress in Adaptive System Provisioning. He replied, ” Me and the team were trying to understand how one of our customers is using our products to identify pain points and we figured that they are having downtimes because of huge loads. We then developed a deep learning model which can predict the capacity for the future and enabled them to avoid downtimes. We then showed the results to that customer and validated the model, and they were delighted with the results. After recognizing the IP in this and the novel way in which we solved the problem one of the PRB members suggested us to pursue it for a patent.”

Who helped you with the project and how?

Everyone has a support group that helps them in their journey towards a goal. We asked Sai as to who helped him make this project successful? “Filing a patent is a long process and it requires continuous motivation to follow up. I and my co-author, Ashish Kumar Singh, helped in motivating each other during the multiple review cycles. The PRB members, Sumeet Mathur and Sudhakar Anivella were instrumental in giving constructive feedback and helped us to add additional dimensions to our patent.”, said Sai.

How long did it take to complete the book and were you recognized for it in any way?

We asked Sai as to how long did it take him to complete the patent process and in what way was he recognized for his commendable work? He replied, ” The PRB process took three months and drafting the patent with attorney took another three months. We got it validated with customers and their feedback on its effectivity was the most fulfilling part for me. Besides that, I was recognized as the youngest inventor in CA and received multiple citations from other thought leaders like IBM and Verizon.”

What would you suggest to those innovators who are considering CA as an employer of choice to join our organization?

“The leadership always recognized and encouraged me in experimenting and finding new ways to solve difficult problems and helping make CA a thought leader in Artificial Intelligence powered Operational Intelligence (AIOP). I feel grateful to my Manager Tribhuwan Yadav, Architect Rajat Kumar Mishra and all my colleagues at CA for their encouragement which motivated me to achieve another four patents.

CA has an excellent Publication and Patent ecosystem which encourages innovation and empowers to think outside of the box. I recommend CA to all those innovators who love to express their unique ideas and plan on achieving their visions.”

Why I Joined CA – Andrea Zaccaro

When thinking of starting the next chapter of your career, starting a new job can be a daunting prospect. How much support will I have? Will I be thrown into the deep end? What will my team be like? That’s why we at CA want to shed some light on what it’s like to start a new job with us with the help of a real life CA Technologies new starter. Here we have a profile from one of our new Software Engineers, as part of our careers blog series, ‘Why I Joined CA’.

Meet Andrea Zaccaro

Andrea is originally from Naples, Italy, and moved to Prague to begin the next chapter of his career in CA’s Prague office as a Software Engineer.

‘Since I was young I loved everything related to the technology. I love to learn new things every day and to work on things that could be vital for the society’

His love for technology was born from his education in Italy and through his family’s nurturing and support. Since joining CA, Andrea has found a career that allows him to apply his knowledge to innovative and creative projects that are invaluable to other businesses and the technological sector.

Why CA Technologies?

The primary draw of CA to Andrea was its motto of ‘breaking barriers’. As a keen believer in the ever-growing influence and importance of software in the modern world, Andrea now relishes the opportunity to be a part of the company’s vital technological innovation.

‘Software gives us the power to change things, help those in need and improve what already exists. In one word, it helps us grow.’

Before joining CA Andrea was a Software Development Consultant for another large corporation, which meant that he wanted to continue his professional development and gain further knowledge in a company with global influence.

‘I feel part of this organization. Every day I’m able to learn something new and I have a lot of opportunities to improve my level of work. The atmosphere is exciting and the big challenges that we need to manage constantly keep me motivated.’

What is starting a new job at CA Technologies like?

Having moved from Italy to the Czech Republic, this is Andrea’s first experience as an expat. CA’s Prague office is a greatly multicultural and diverse environment, with a great number of people who have relocated from other parts of the world. Upon joining the company, Andreas found great support from his team, both in and out of work, through their understanding of the relocation process.

‘My teammates and managers helped me a lot at the beginning- for everything related to my job and not. This allowed me to focus on my work because you know that you will always have help. This is so important, especially for someone who has left their home, family and friends.’

Now that Andrea has experienced CA’s onboarding process, he feels that he will now be able to help other new starters and continue the company’s welcoming and supportive stance. He and his colleagues all have the confidence to present their ideas to each other, encouraging creativity and innovative brainstorming.

‘We work in an agile context, which encourages us to create connections, in a circular chain that bonds us.’

Andrea has found that the atmosphere of his new workplace to be invigorating, with every team member committed to helping the company in achieving excellence, yet still having fun.

‘Life at CA is an exciting daily journey, filled with challenges and good practices- a special mixture that can improve us as employees and as citizens in a fast paced, unpredictable world’
