Women in Leadership at CA Technologies | Stefania D’Alessandro

As part of our “Bring What You Bring – Women in Leadership” blog series, we’re celebrating several of our women in leadership to find out what they bring to the organization.

Meet Stefania D’Alessandro. She’s a Presales Consultant, Agile Management.

What does a Presales Consultant do?

The first requirement of a Presales Consultant, according to Stefania, is that they have clear, strong knowledge of CA’s solutions. They must be thorough and knowledgeable, as she states the worst mistake someone in this position could make is to assume.

‘If I had to use a metaphor, I would say that Presales folks are a bi-directional translator between business and technology: we solve industry-specific customer challenges through a solid understanding of CA solutions.’

‘In a nutshell, my daily job consists of working closely with Customers, Sales, Business Development, Marketing, Services and Partners to ensure that we have a data-driven understanding of the needs of our customers. Secondly, we must develop a tailored value proposition to our customers, based upon CA’s industry-leading software, as well as unrivalled engagement quality.’

Bring What You Bring

The core philosophy of the ‘Bring What You Bring’ concept is that every CA employee’s own talents, interests and passions are recognized and utilized. The team then builds upon individuals’ strengths, generating the best possible results. When speaking to Stefania about what she brings to CA, this is what she had to say:

‘My former and present co-workers at CA say I bring strong work ethic, reliability and trustworthiness on both professional and personal levels, proactiveness, a detail-oriented and analytical mindset. Not only this but I bring a passion for solving problems, learning and sharing new things every day. I do think that the learning curve (both professional and personal) should always be reasonably steep, in order for us to constantly break our barriers and fight against inertia.’

Advice for current or future Women Leaders

Stefania is a firm believer in the great important in listening to achieve success. Being approachable and staying focused on success is a vital part in achieving your goals. Her top four pieces of advice are:

  • ‘Make data-driven decisions only (be as unbiased as possible)
  • Practice “selective hearing” to not lose your focus
  • Let your work speak for you
  • Empower your co-workers and promote open dialogue’

 My female inspiration

Stefania said that her biggest female role model is undoubtedly her grandmother, Maria:

‘Born in 1922 in Southern Italy, she soon proved to have an avant-garde mentality, which led her to increasingly resent the narrow-mindedness of that period and to be thrown out of the house. She then emigrated alone and led a life full of adventure (not without sacrifices as well as hard work). The most important things she taught me are the priceless value of education- which highly motivated me to complete my PhD studies in Mathematics- and the importance of being independent (financially as well as emotionally). Last but not least, she taught me the importance of not taking things too seriously, which she kept doing until she died in 2015, aged 93- still amazing, ironic and witty.’

 Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the company’s mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. Stefania has selected the most important DNA trait that she feels will make her a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

‘If I had to pick the top three DNA traits that will make me a successful woman in leadership at CA, they would be:

  • Resilient – I am simply too stubborn to give up.
  • Collaborative & Creative – I feel very lucky to be part of two incredible teams here at CA: the Digital Presales team, based in Prague, and the EMEA Agile Management Presales team. The key to our success is that we always go the extra mile to help each other and to share our knowledge/resources, for which I am very grateful. I am also very proud of the creative results we come up with when we join forces!
  • Results-Oriented – I don’t like shortcuts and I believe success shouldn’t be based on self-promotion, but on measurable criteria, validated by key stakeholders, such as co-workers, partners and ultimately customers.’

Why I Joined CA – Helena Binkova

When thinking of starting the next chapter of your career, starting a new job can be a daunting prospect. How much support will I have? Will I be thrown into the deep end? What will my team be like? That’s why we at CA want to shed some light on what it’s like to start a new job with us with the help of a real-life CA Technologies new starter. Here we have a profile from one of our new Software Engineers, as part of our careers blog series, ‘Why I Joined CA’.

Meet Helena Binkova

Helena has always loved to travel and to seek new adventures- before joining CA in Prague as a Principal Software Engineer she lived and worked in China. When she isn’t working, Helena loves to spend time with her young son. Not only is she a keen programmer, but she nurtures her creativity with painting and photography. She even recently held her own photography exhibition in Prague.

‘I always like to explore new things and try new hobbies. I believe that the path to happiness is to fill my life with activities and people I love.’

Why CA Technologies?

Even before joining CA, Helena knew that they were known to be a very ethical company that offered their employees with excellent benefits.

‘That is the reputation that CA has among people in the IT field. After joining CA I can only support that!’

Upon joining CA, Helen was given the opportunity to establish a new green field project. Working as a Principal Software Engineer has allowed her to combine her skills in programming and technology with her creative flare, which is encouraged by CA. Not only this, but she is able to draw on her strengths and experience as a mother in the development of her latest project-

‘I can be an important part of bringing something brand new to life, supporting it in its first steps and leading it to a phase when it is mature enough to start its own life’

Helena relishes the opportunity to make a difference in her new role at CA, with the support and encouragement of her team.

‘Many ideas I have come up with so far have been appreciated and nurtured. That is great feeling.’

Since joining CA, Helena has also been given the chance to take part in a cross-team effort to prepare a CSS library. This will help her team to unify the appearance of all products in their BU and maybe even in other units within CA.

What is starting a new job at CA Technologies like?

The most prominent feature of Helena’s onboarding experience at CA was the support she received from her new colleagues. She started work at the same time as another colleague and both had their equipment set up ready for them to use before they had arrived for their first day. This meant that Helena felt at ease straight away and had the confidence to start creating work as soon as possible.

‘It was the fastest hire I have experienced! Everyone was very supportive, and we were able to deliver our first feature prototype in ten days. This would not have been possible without such great support.’

Helena has found that the team at CA are not only warm and welcoming, but exceptional in their work. They take the time to complement each other and take the time to communicate, demonstrating their passion for the company and their projects.

‘What I appreciate a lot is that every one of us is not just doing a good job, but we really like what we are doing. It makes a huge difference.’

Intern at CA: Laura Pianin

Laura Pianin, CA Product Communications Intern

Every year, CA Technologies invites our intern class to seize the summer and make an impact on our business. We asked a few of this year’s interns to share their experiences and give insight to what it’s like to be an intern here at CA.

Meet Laura Pianin, Product Communications Intern in the Santa Clara office.

What attracted you to an internship at CA?

“I grew up surrounded by technology and in a family of engineers. My dad would bring home e-wasted parts and set up computers for my brother and I to use; we taught ourselves new programs, played games, and just explored. Growing up with engineers, it was always a “figure it out” type of culture in my house. If something broke, how do you fix it? If you don’t know how to do something, teach yourself. I think that type of learning instilled a general interest in exploring the technology industry as a whole and there really is no better place to do that than in the heart of Silicon Valley.”

Technology runs though Laura’s veins. Being surrounded by a family of engineers growing up, and exposure to tech at an early age it’s no surprise that this summer wasn’t Laura’s first internship.

“I was previously a communications intern at the Center for Women and Business at my college, Bentley University. We were a small team, but it allowed me to get to know my co-workers and develop good working relationships. Now, coming to CA, it was a big adjustment to work in a large global company. I’m thankful to have both perspectives as I figure out what working environment suits me best.”

CA Technologies has a vast portfolio ranging from mainframe to cloud and everything in between, and Laura was tasked with learning the CA product portfolio and then writing about it in a way that makes sense to all audiences.

What’s it like writing for a large tech company like CA?

“Writing about CA and the technology industry brings some unique challenges. I remember being completely overwhelmed by the shear depth and breadth of CA’s product portfolio and then realizing I have to take these complex products, themes, and ideas and tell effective stories. As someone who has always loved writing, I wanted to embrace this; I think part of the “magic” and one of the most satisfying aspects of writing and storytelling is conveying complicated ideas in accessible ways.”

Describe your day-to-day

“I usually get to the office early, right around 7:30. It’s kind of a calm before the storm feeling at that time, but I like the quiet and solitude especially when I’m working on a writing assignment. Because I work with both internal and external communications, I get varied items on my to do list. Some days I’m working on internal memos or blogs while on others I’m working on social media research or communications for upcoming events. Having a wide variety of tasks is something I value.

“Then it’s off to lunch with either my team or the other interns. We’ve had some fun intern ping pong matches and have explored the other floors together. It’s nice to connect with other people going through similar experiences and learning about all the projects we’re working on.”

“Usually, I’ll have a conference call to listen in on what the wider team is doing or have a weekly one on one with one of my managers to report back on some of my action items.”

An internship is the opportunity to act like a sponge, and absorb as much information as possible. At CA, we provide an environment that exposes our interns to as many different areas as possible, in hopes that they leave our offices at the end of summer loaded with new knowledge and with a sense of pride for the projects they worked on.

“Working in the product org, I get a good holistic perspective on lots of different areas of the company. I feel like I’ve been able to get to know CA at a much quicker pace because of this. It’s also rewarding to see a blog post or memo I worked on be published—it moved from my just cube to being accessible to thousands of people.”

What is the best part about your office?

“10th floor balcony. I hate being trapped inside all day, especially during the summer. I usually always take at least ten minutes in the afternoon to go outside and clear my head. Often, it’s where I do my best thinking if I’m having some writers block or stuck on a brainstorm.”

How would you describe your relationship with your manager?

“I get to work with two managers, one located in my local office and one in Denver, CO. Both are kind, receptive to questions, and provide helpful feedback. They let me work independently but are there if I need some guidance.”

What advice would you have for an Intern candidate coming to interview?

“Research and connect. Research CA, know the company’s mission and values, the industry it operates in, and catch up on the latest news about the company. Then, with that in mind, think about how your story, values, interests, experience, classes, projects, etc. connect to the company. This doesn’t mean don’t be yourself to try to fit perfectly into CA; in fact, one of the things that really drew me to CA was that they embrace uniqueness, so the interview is really an opportunity show who you are. Before I have an interview, I like to ask myself what do I want the interviewer to take away from our conversation, what are the key points I want to get across?”

Many people that are new to the tech industry do not know CA Technologies. What advice or comments would you have for them about choosing to intern for a lesser-known B2B technology company, rather than a better-known brand like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc?

“Although big name brands and consumer electronics companies are much more visible in the press and well-known, working at a B2B technology company gives you an interesting experience and perspective. The products CA makes allows many of these companies to actually successfully develop solutions or run critical systems effectively.”

If you’re ready to bring what you bring to CA, learn more and search our positions here.

Intern At CA: Laura Haldane

One of CA’s interns, Laura Haldane, took the time to discuss her time at the company and her perceptions after having worked ‘behind the scenes’. A Business Management graduate at Oxford Brookes University, she wanted to get an insight into the inner workings of a software company of CA Technologies’ calibre. Laura’s internship lasts until the 24th of August 2018, upon which she shall return to university and hopes to go on to work in a multinational company in the technological industry.

What attracted you to an internship at CA this year?

Having studied Business Management at University for 2 years before taking on an internship, I knew I wanted to get experience working in a software/tech company. It became clear to me over the course of the two years that effectively every company needs to undergo a Digital Transformation in order to keep up to speed with demand online and on apps. CA helps customers manage their online portfolio and compete strategically in the marketplace. In addition, the office here at Ditton Park in Datchet is fantastic. There are gym facilities, outdoor basketball courts, which are great to use during lunch breaks or after work.

Tell us more about your role in the EMEA Communications?

My role has allowed me to gain hands on experience with our Create Tomorrow program, which is where our CSR efforts are focused in EMEA. I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer at local schools and speak on panels. In addition, I’ve had the opportunity to travel across Europe and a highlight so far has been attending the European Digital Assembly 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria. I’ve also had the opportunity to gain experience with our PR Agencies in London, helping them write pitches for press and create social content calendars.

What is a typical day for you?

Wake up at 7am – make myself a cup of tea and read the news, check Instagram and Facebook…( I like a slow start to the day, I hate rushing around in the morning). Leave for work and drive to the office around 8:30am. I grab a coffee before getting to my desk and always check my email first thing. Depending on how busy I am, I will take a lunch break around 12 and play basketball/netball or take part in Yoga or Pilates. I leave work around 5:30pm and usually meet up with a few of the other interns for dinner or drinks.

Favourite part of the internship?

The opportunity to travel and work with a European team. My team have been extremely welcoming and collaborative, involving me in as much as they can. I have helped run Deploy Your Talents events in Germany and attended a Security Roundtable discussion in Brussels.  I also attended a Quarterly Communications Team meeting in Milan and received training in Crisis Communications Management.

Would an intern might want to consider a lesser-known B2B Technology Company as opposed to a better-known brand?

I’ve always enjoyed the reaction I get when I tell people I work at CA Technologies, especially when I tell people my age. 8 time out of 10, nobody has heard of CA as they are a B2B company, so I quite enjoy telling them who CA are and how our products are enabling companies to digitally transform. Despite being lesser-known, our products are actually used by some of the biggest brands in the world, such as Netflix, L’Oreal and BT.

Favourite aspect of the DNA mission?

COLLABORATIVE: I truly enjoy working as part of a team to make sure a task gets finished. My European team are great at giving me advice where needed and providing me with constructive feedback on work. They understand that in order for me to get the most out of my internship, they need to work closely with me on tasks that they feel I would be good at. It is hugely satisfying to work with a team that are passionate about what they do too.

Advice for a candidate coming for an interview at CA Technologies?

Come prepared and do your research. Having confidence is also key, but being able to show that you’ve done your ‘homework’ for the interview shows you plan ahead. In addition, don’t be afraid to talk about your hobbies and interests outside of work. Wellbeing and having a work/life balance is something that is encouraged by the Wellbeing at CA team and shows to the interviewer that you have passions and interests beyond the world of work.

CA is extremely happy to welcome Laura to its vast family and wishes her success for her career ahead.

Intern At CA: Vasu Sharma

Through our Intern @ CA blog series, we cover the stories of such enthusiastic interns who have joined CA Technologies. Vasu Sharma is a final year student of The UPES College, Dehradun, who had interned with CA as a Cyber Security Developer.

How did you know about CA Technologies?

On asking Vasu about how he came across CA Technologies, he said “My answer to this question is a bit different from those of other interns. CA Technologies is a B2B company which creates products for large enterprises. I came to know about CA Technologies when it visited my college for the first time. And to be honest, once I heard the news of CA visiting my campus I did my research around the company and was very much overwhelmed by its products.

How was the Intern Program selection process?

Fulfilling dreams isn’t very easy and requires hard work and dedication and it is only then that one relishes the fruit of labor. For Vasu, the selection process was intensive but worth it.

“Getting an internship with a corporate that has such a great product base was quite surprising. I never thought of getting into a company this big as an intern, but thanks to CA’s business structure of having a separate business unit for Security, I got the opportunity I was looking for. I have done B-Tech with a specialization in Cyber Security and the company came to the campus for recruitment with a single vacancy in Cyber Security. Fortunately, I was selected for the role after 3 rounds of interviews. The first round was an aptitude assessment which was held on Cocubes, an online platform. This was followed by an online video interview which analyzed my technical knowledge of Java and the details of the projects I had done in the past. The final round was an online HR interview which focused on behavioral and situation-based questions. A week later I was offered an internship with CA technologies as a Developer in the Cyber Security business unit.

What exposure did you receive on your CA Internship?

Internships are there to provide an extensive learning experience which prepares you for the actual challenges you’ll face in the fast-paced, dynamic, competitive and ever-growing industry. This is exactly what CA provided Vasu with as well as such freedom within what he delivered.

He said, “I worked within the Security business unit and was assigned a server-side migration project. Apart from this main assignment, I worked with logarithms for some functionality engraving in existing products. I also took up a project that belonged to a completely different business unit and this was possible because CA gives you the freedom to select, work and learn about any project that interests you”.

How did your assigned CA mentor benefit your Internship experience?

As part of the internship program, it’s crucial interns feel supported through their time at CA. Vasu was no different and spoke positively of the great support he received from his mentor Venky Venkata Swamy Karukuri.

“On the first day of my internship I was introduced to an architect (basically a product designer) named Venky and I feel fortunate to have worked under him. He assigned me to challenging projects and despite his busy schedule, he would arrange for weekly meetings to ensure that I was on the right track. He would guide me around various aspects of technology and life, clearing all my doubts regarding my project and the industry. He introduced me to several experienced colleagues who were a great source of learning for me. The experience of being an intern at CA was unlike any other.”

What do you like most about CA Technologies?

The company believes that in order to hone one’s skills and perform well, employees require a conducive, lively and relaxed environment and that is only possible when people come together and feel like a single unit.

“To be honest, the best thing about the company is the collaborative nature of its employees who make time to respond to queries despite being busy. There is a strong team spirit among the members of staff and a zeal to excel as a team rather than an individual.” says Vasu.

How was the success of your Internship rewarded?

A dedicated and passionate student, a proficient mentor and a jubilant environment make the perfect potion for success. But being appreciated and rewarded makes the success even sweeter. On being asked about the appreciations and rewards he received during his internship, Vasu replied, “I did receive appreciation for the three projects I worked on”. But being offered a permanent role at CA was the biggest reward for him.

“To be honest, getting a pre-placement offer from a product-based company is the best feeling in the entire world for a B-Tech graduate. I was thrilled the moment I received a call from the company saying that I’d been offered PPO. I was overjoyed by the news and I didn’t think twice before agreeing to take the offer.”

What do you like most about the ITC?

Vasu was extremely complimentary of the India Technology Center in Hyderabad and the facilities available. We asked Vasu as to what were the main things about the ITC that made him look forward to coming to the CA campus every day?

His response was, “CA has a great campus with a lot of greenery and open spaces. The workstations are spacious and comfortable and the refreshment station on each floor is loaded all the time. The cafeteria too gives a variety of food options”.

What advice would you offer to those who are currently looking for an Internship?

On being asked as to what he would advise to others on choosing a company to work for, he happily stated, “CA is a B2B company and hence many may not be aware of the brand, but CA has a presence in every sector from banking to e-commerce and other applications. As CA is a product-based company I would recommend aspirants to know about algorithms and data structures from a technical point of view. Also, in terms of why CA is an employer of choice, CA employees enjoy a great work life balance and flexibility at work.”

CA is extremely happy to welcome Vasu to its vast family and wishes him all the success for his career ahead.
